John Joseph McCarthy, Jr., age 84, of Westport, beloved husband of Susan Ryan McCarthy, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2022. Born in New York City in 1937, son of the late John J. McCarthy, Sr. and Marie Lefler McCarthy, John attended All Hallows Grammar School, La Salle Military Academy in Long Island, and graduated from St. John's University in 1959. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving in the 197th ASA from 1960-64. Mr. McCarthy had been a Westport Town resident for 50 years, working as a salesman for the Modern Printing and Lithography Company until his retirement. John was an avid reader and enjoyed fly fishing, especially at Lake Eshquaguma in Gilbert, MN, and the Aspetuck and Saugatuck Rivers in Westport, CT. He served as a lector for many years at Assumption Church in Westport, CT. John devoted the majority of his spare time to his family. He tirelessly supported Westport's youth and Staples High School athletics. When not present in Westport, John and Susan spent much of their time in Captiva Island, FL, a location that he cherished and regarded as his retreat. In addition to Susan, his loving wife of 56 years, he leaves behind his son, John J. McCarthy, III, and his wife, Patricia Maribona McCarthy, of New York City; granddaughters, Cecilia and Clarissa McCarthy; as well as a sister, Barbara McCarthy Holmes; and three nephews, Gregory, Gilbert and John Holmes. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. directly at the Assumption Church of Westport, 98 Riverside Avenue, with his burial to follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield, CT. Friends may call on Monday, August 29, 2022, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center.
