John Rooney Obituary

John B. Rooney
John Bernard Rooney, age 73 of Huntington, beloved husband of Dorothy (Doylak) Rooney died on November 17, 2019. John was born on March 21, 1946. His surviving family includes Dorothy, daughter Amy Conklin, sons Timothy and Sean, and grandchildren Abby, Molly, Ty and Emerson. John was predeceased by his parents, Julia and William Rooney and was the oldest of 7 children. He is also survived by sisters Julie Hennessy (Joseph), Jane Walsh (Seamus) and brothers William (Mary Ann), Kevin (Patricia), Edwin (Linda) and Lawrence (Tracy) and many cousins/nieces/nephews from the USA and Prince Edward Island - the home of John's father William. John deeply loved his spouse Dorothy, his 3 children and especially the loves of his life - his grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Church and Our Lady of Peace Church. He graduated from Blessed Sacrament Grammar School (1960), Notre Dame High School (1964), SCSU (1968) and did his graduate work in Math/Economics at UCONN (1968/69). In high school, John played baseball and football and was a captain on the 1st ND State Championship Baseball Team. He was a member of the ND Athletic Hall of Fame. In college, he earned All Conference Honors as a line backer for SCSU. He held numerous executive positions at SNET/SBC/ATT (1969-2005) including positions in sales, marketing, finance, taxes, government relations, network operations and as the interface with the FCC/DPUC. He was past Vice President of Shelton Little League, past president of Civitan and St. Joseph HS Touchdown Club, SCSU Football Scholarship Committee member, past board member of New Haven County Chapter of American Diabetes Association and with Dorothy received the 1991 St. Joseph HS Award for "Outstanding Service to the St. Joseph Community". He also coached/managed Little League and Babe Ruth teams for many years.
John donated his time to the Thomas Merton Community Center and with his fellow St. Lawrence parishioners, prepared, cooked, and served meals to the Center's clients. He treasured his "role" as son, brother, spouse, father, grandfather, and uncle. He loved reading, wood working, swimming laps at the pool, building stone walls, working on his children's homes and spending time at his "other" family home on Prince Edward Island. With Dorothy, John loved to attend every grandchildren's activity including soccer, horse riding, baseball, basketball, plays, art shows, school concerts, and even Legos. John valued his faith/religion and believed that humor could serve as a great "value add". John proudly shared his Rooney Family Tree/Genealogy knowledge with his family on the long journey from Ireland (1847) to Canada to the USA.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 10 am DIRECTLY at St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave., Shelton. Interment in Lawn Cemetery. For some reason, I was just thinking about John this morning. I am so very sorry to hear of his passing. I knew John for many of our years at SNET/SBC/AT&T. He was an incredible person. Not only was he very intelligent but he was equally a wonderful friend until our parting at the company!

Just found out that this great person and long time friend has past.
We had a relationship for over 30 years with both sharing similar positions in Telecom. Even after a move to Texas we would talk every year, and it became a tradition as to who would call first. Always talked about kids, grand kids and experiences as a Husband, Father and Grandfather.
I will miss these calls, and always remember our jokes and friendship.
Deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Dorothy and all their children.

Dear Dorothy and Family, I am greatly saddened to hear of the loss of my friend John. Please accept my condolences and know that John is in my prayers. As you know, John was a very special person. Foremost, he always cherished his family and I admired that most about him. It's been said that the good die young and that's true in John's case. He was a caring man. I was extremely touched to have him reach out to me after reading about my son Tim's baseball accomplishments in the local paper. This led to John and I reconnecting and having many discussions about baseball and the success of his son's college baseball careers and now with his grandson playing travel ball. He was super excited about that. I, in turn, was looking forward to filling him in about how my Tim was doing as he starts his college baseball career this spring. I will miss him and will be thinking of him always, especially when I'm at the baseball field.

My deepest condolences to the Rooney family. I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of John's passing. His passion, integrity, compassion, and zest for life made him a special person. I was fortunate to have worked for him for several years, and with him on multiple projects. I have always considered him the best boss I ever had. He respected and valued the members of his team, and I learned how to be a good manager from him. Family was important to him, and his face would always light up when talking about their exploits and adventures. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this most difficult of times.

Dear Dorothy and Family: I am unable to come to John's funeral due to back problems. However, I am shocked and saddened the passing of your wonderful husband. John was a valued colleague and my good friend. His effectiveness in so many varied jobs is a testimony to his intelligence and good judgment and especially to the respect and admiration in which he was held by all who worked with and for him. A great leader. But more than that, John was a family man. His love for you and the rest of his family were an ever present part of his conversations and an inspiration to those of us fortunate enough to work closely with him. We have all lost a good man. There is no doubt in my mind that he is with God telling about his trips to PEI.

John and I were camp councilors at Fairfield U. during the summer of '63 and spent a lot of time sneaking a peek at Giant practices. Later that fall we played football against each other, back when ND/Prep was a great rivalry. Our paths didn't cross very often after HS, but when it did, there were great memories of shared good times. His laugh was infectious. RIP my friend.

My condolences to his family.

My deepest condolences to Dorothy and the entire Rooney family. I was shocked and saddened to read about John's passing. He possessed never-ending love, pride, and dedication to his family. Having one conversation with John made you acutely aware of this. His tremendous love for you all loomed brightly. Dorothy was always a topic which made his whole face light-up. He would say in such a loving way that he married up.
I cherished our friendship, our many conversations and laughs over the years, both about family and about work. Our discussion after we read Angela's Ashes is one that remains a vivid memory.
John was a very special person. He excelled at being a remarkable human being: Truly one in a million. My memories of John will be with me always.

Affectionately,
Mona Liebers Tenedine
