Lawrence Laukhuf Obituary

LAUKHUF Lawrence A. Laukhuf, aged 65 of Fairfield, passed away on September 8, 2011 at St. Vincent's Medical Center with his wife and children by his side. Larry was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was predeceased by his mother, Marie Rosenberg Laukhuf; father, Charles August Laukhuf; and sister, Lois Laukhuf DeSio. After serving in the Marine Corps, he started a career in graphic design in the Art Department of Readers' Digest Magazine. He was an associate Art Director for Western Publishing Company and then the Art Director of Guideposts magazine for nineteen years. While at Guideposts, he was most proud of the rising new illustrators he mentored and the numerous awards he received from The Society of Illustrators. Before his retirement earlier this year, he worked in the publications and printing department of Gateway Community College, where he leaves many dear friends and colleagues. Larry's family and friends will remember him for his ever present sense of humor, his unfailingly positive outlook on life, and his inexhaustible generosity. He often quoted Lou Gehrig's farewell speech, "I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." He is survived by his wife Lynne; daughter, Shannon; and son, Adam, who wish to thank the kind and caring nurses and staff of the Medical Specialists of Fairfield and St. Vincent's Medical Center's 7South floor. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11am DIRECTLY at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 661 Old Post Rd., Fairfield. Interment will be held privately. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Rd., Fairfield Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Gateway Community College Foundation, for the Larry Laukhuf Memorial Scholarship, c/o Evelyn Gard, 60 Sargent Drive, New Haven CT 06511. My sincere sympathy to Larry's family. He was my "right-hand" man at GCC. We laughed so hard, so often. I missed him when I left, but we kept in touch with jokes through e-mail. He was a superb person - funny, dedicated, loyal and kind. I will miss him dearly, yet treasure all the fond memories shared. You are all in my prayers. Semper Fi, my dear friend.

I worked with Larry at Gateway CC. Both of us being animal lovers we shared many stories about our furry friends. After he left GCC he would send me animal emails to warm my heart. He was a real family man always talking about his wife, son and daughter. Larry was so knowledgeable-I always came away learning something from our conversations. He was kind and warm and a joy to be around. His bravery throughout his illness is to be admired. Larry came in to see us a few weeks ago and I am so happy we had that visit with him. My condolences go out to all of his family members-you are in my heart, thoughts and in my prayers. We lost a real fine man on Thursday. Rest in Peace Larry.
