My aunt Maude was such a special person to so many people for so many years that it's hard to imagine life will be the same without her somewhere. While I was visiting at Carolton, one of the nurses said, "Gee, Mrs. Swan, You must have done something right." It was a reference to all her visitors. I quickly chimed in that she took care of everyone all these years as the family's matriarch. When I said it Maude looked a little bewildered, tilted her head, grinned in that off center way, eye twinkling, then said as if just realizing it herself, "Yes, I guess I did." My first childhood memory is of Maude taking good care of Jimmy - I remember her working two jobs, teaching and selling cards to put him thru private schools, but never complaining. When I was a teenager and my mother was sick, Maude and Ken took me into their home and gave me food, shelter and love even though they didn't have much and I was hard to handle! It was there I had my first "nice little fresh fruit cup" with dinner! Later in my mother's life when she was jobless and without insurance, Maude bought her a car and supported her for a long time, as did Jim and Nessy. She helped many friends and family beyond what most would do - I bet we all have our stories....Later in life Maude formed a special bond with my son, William, seeing through his disabilities and touching a special place in his heart like the seasoned child expert she was. He loved Maude very much and sometimes he just touches the paper mache clown Maude gave him and says, "This is special because it makes me think of Maude." A rare complete sentence out of him...I remember Maude and Walt throwing wonderful parties for family milestones; I remember her caring and generosity with people she hired to clean the house, landscape or do other chores...The strength of Maude's love for Jim and Nessy and of Ben, his family and the church is something I'll always remember...It seems everything Maude said and did reflected intelligence, wisdom and warmth. Even when she disapproved and gave the head down, eyes up at you stare, she always let you know that she would be there no matter what because she was not judgmental.... And so I take comfort in knowing Maude will live on in all of us through the strong example she set so eloquently throughout her life. Even though life is never long enough when you love someone, I do know that Maude had a quality life because she loved life so much and I think that was true to the very end because she could still burst out laughing and was looking forward to many things..That's the way to go at 96! love, Pam, Will, Kathleen and Deb

Maude was such a dear friend. I have many fond memories of working with her on the St. Nicholas Fair at St. Paul's. She loved her family very much. She was so proud of Jim and Nessie and all of the members of her extended family. We will all miss her baked goods. I hope someone will publish her cookbook! We will also miss her wonderful stories. What a life she had! The world needs more people like Maude. With our deepest sympathy. The Davis Family-Tom, Celeste, Thomas and Allison

Maude was my teacher in the 5th grade at Thomas Hooker School in Bridgeport in 1953. I will remember her with a great deal of fondness as one of the best teachers I've ever had. We could use more like her.
