Morgan Kaolian Obituary

Morgan Kaolian
Morgan Kaolian, age 90, of Stratford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgeport on April 5, 1928, he was a son of the late Howard and Florence Mazlemian Kaolian. While still in high school, Morgan earned his Private Pilot's certificate after soloing at age 16. Following an Army tour of duty in Japan, he attended the Whitney School of Art. After graduation, he established a public relations and advertising agency in downtown Bridgeport. Known as 'Captain Traffic' he became Connecticut's first airborne traffic reporter, flying "Flight 600," for WICC radio, for three decades. His lifelong passion for aviation led him to a career in aerial photography, piloting sky rides in his Piper Cub and 1929 biplane, and manager of the Sikorsky Memorial Airport. Survivors include his son Kit Kaolian of Milford, Morgan's loving partner of 25 years Patricia Stone of Stratford, her children, to whom Morgan was like a father: Kelly Durrschmidt of Stratford and Ken Durrschmidt and his wife Nicole of Astoria, NY; and the apple of his eye, granddaughter Kyah. He is also survived by his brother, Sarkis Kaolian and his wife Heidi and their children, Morgan's nephews, Alexander, Christopher and Gregory. He was predeceased by Kit's mother, Christine Ernst. A heart-felt thank you to his loving and caring home health aides Jennifer Stedford and Anfrieda King. Friends may greet the family on Friday, February 1, 2019, from 3 – 7 p.m. followed by a service at 7 p.m. officiated by Rev. Untzag Nalbandian in the Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension, 1460 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. directly in the Church. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to either Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension or to Connecticut Air & Space Center, P.O. Box 1293, Stratford, CT 06615. I will always remember the impact Morgan, and his friends, Harry and Mo, had on my son's aviation career, when we lived in Stratford.

WE are saddened at the death of Morgan. He was a mentor to our son Mathew from the time he was 11 y/o at the CT model airplane club, to co-owning a Cessna 150 when he was in Aviation School at the Airport in Stratford and working as his mechanic on the Bi-Plane. Morgan was also the person that supported this school when it was going to be closed in the early 2000's and kept it open.
We remember reconditioning his hanger, dinners at long beach, and flights in the bi-plane and Piper Cub. Helping to get the museum up and running at the Army engine plant, along with support for the funding to rebuild the Curtis hanger at the airport.

I have great memories from a young age of my grandfather Morris Pittorie telling me about Morgan flying and reporting the traffic. We listened to him often. My favorite memories were of him flying over my grandfather's house in Shelton and yelling out "Hey Moe" on the top of his lungs while buzzing the tree tops and tipping his wings back and worth while he flew out of sight! They spent many days working on projects in my grandfather's basement hobby room over the years and it was always a pleasure to see him and talk to him. A really interesting and inspiring person who I told everyone I knew about over the years. In their 80's my grandfather told me they flew to Gabreski Airport in Long Island, and new they were probably somewhere near my house, little did they know they were only 7 miles away! I have many great aerial pictures that were saved on Moe's computer from Morgan. "Inspirational" sums up the impression he left upon me! Prayers with all who knew him!

I first met him in 1958 when I was 16 years old. He had an office on Main Street in downtown Bridgeport and I was the pickup/delivery boy as my first job for Conn. Photo Blue. Morgan would have us do jobs for him and I was the one making the pickups and deliveries to his office. One of my fondest memories is when I wanted to give my granddaughter a sightseeing flight so of course we got in touch with Morgan and he gave me, my daughter, my son-in-law, and of course my granddaughter this wonderful experience. It was a flight that none of us will ever forget.

My deepest condolences to the Kaolian family. I never met Mr Kaolian however, I will always be grateful and thankful to him for his most accuate traffic reports. I used to commute from Fairfield to Mt. Kisco NY. I would always listen to Mr Kaolian on WICC on my return home. On more than one occasion he would say"if you planning to take the Merritt northbound...don't take 95" He saved me from many traffic jams. I'm sure he is reporting from a higher level now. RIP. My first ride in an airplane was with Morgan in the 1970's. I never felt less than perfectly safe. Every time I look at the sky I will think of him. RIP

To the Kaolian family,

Growing up in Bridgeport, part of the fabric of the city was listening to Mr. Kaolian's traffic reports on the radio. He dispensed wisdom as well and was a pleasure to listen to. I am so sorry for your loss. May he rest in eternal peace.

With deepest sympathy,

MMG

Our cousin will be sorely missed as he was always a delight to be with. He constantly had an infectious glow about him that everyone in his vicinity would notice and adjust to; it was contagious. He was a multi-talented artist, inventor, and humanitarian.
