Stephen Sawyer Obituary

Sawyer Sr, Stephen J.
Stephen J. Sawyer Sr., 86, of West Haven passed away unexpectedly on June 2, 2016. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean Pasch Sawyer. Steve was a strong, loving and supportive father to his daughter Maureen Sawyer and his three predeceased sons Jeffrey, Kelly and Stephen J. Sawyer Jr.
In addition to Maureen, he leaves many nieces, nephews and friends.
Education was a something Steve loved and appreciated. He graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri and then went on to pursue a degree in business at the University of Miami. At the age of 70, Steve received his PhD from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. A veteran of the Korean War, he served stateside in the Army. He was the former owner of Shoreline Mortgage, West Haven. A very important part of his daily routine was swimming, attending mass and the Rosary at St. Agnes Church in Woodmont. Steve never stopped learning. He frequented the library, continued to do research and write about those topics that interested him.
Steve will be remembered for his wicked sense of humor and one who loved the friends of his children as if they were his own. He was a true gentleman and scholar. It is in this spirit, that his daughter asks, In lieu of flowers, that you consider designating yourself as an organ donor.
Visitation will take place on WEDNESDAY evening from 4 to 6:30 pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the green. On Thursday morning the procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Agnes Church at 11 o'clock. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Shelton. My heartfelt condolences to Stephen's family.

I treasured Stephen's friendship since the first time he sat in my class years ago, along with his subsequent visits to my Gateway Community College seminars and classes. I will treasure the memory of our ongoing meetings, of his academic and scholarly discussions--his erudite correspondences, his insatiable desire to learn, and his authentic search for knowledge.

We were scheduled to meet again this month -- so I am shocked to hear of his passing. Indeed, I will miss him very much.

Steve was a gentleman and a scholar. His insight into education has made me a better teacher on both the secondary and college levels. He will be missed and surely remembered...Joe Corcoran

I had the pleasure of meeting Steve at the McCann Natatorium where I would see him 2-3 times a week. Yes, a gentleman he was. I was rooting for him to have the heart surgery he was anticipating, and figured that's why I haven't seem him lately. But I heard this morning from another swimmer that Steve had passed and I'm very saddened by that. But he seemed like a very positive soul who will no doubt do well in his future. My condolences to you, Maureen.
