Funeral services for Addie M. Farrell, 84, of West Pierce Street, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the West Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Hinze, pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church, officiating. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park in Amarillo, Texas. Arrangements were made through West Funeral Home.
Farrell died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Carlsbad Medical Center.
A mother's love is like the sun, always there. It's as warm and freely given, as a breath of spring fresh air. A mother's love is sheltering, a comfort through the years. Her gentle touch can heal a hurt or wipe away our tears. A mother's love is like the sky spacious without measure, reaching out with faith and trust. Her love is a life long treasure.
Addie M. Farrell was born June 27, 1923, in Ft. Worth, Texas, to Virgil Mack and Ida (Gilchrist) Woodall.
From an early age, Addie was bound for leadership. In elementary school, she received the Presidential Award Ribbons for her Fire Prevention Posters. In high school, she excelled in music, art and drama, playing the lead in her high school plays and choral concerts. In her senior year, she was the class valedictorian and was given the honor of writing out her graduation high school diplomas.
Upon graduation from high school, she moved to Amarillo, Texas, and went to work for the Defense Plant at Pantex. While there she built bombs for our nation's planes and military use during World War II and received an award from the President of the USA for her dedication, honor and duty to our fighting men and women.
During this time she met Royce Coleman Black and wrote to him while he was stationed in the Philippines. Upon his return, they married in Tucumcari, on Nov. 28, 1945. During their marriage, they had four children. In 1959, they moved to Carlsbad and began working at Cashway Foods side by side for years. When Furr's Grocery Store opened, she went to work for them for 23 years. Their greatest accomplishments were raising their children. Following the death of Royce, Addie remained a widow for five years. She then married Joel Vance Farrell and they enjoyed many wonderful years of marriage and had numerous years of accomplishments together.
Addie was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Royce C. Black and Joel V. Farrell; sisters: Ruby Satriano and Norvell Greer; brother, Bill Davis; grandchildren: John Curtis Brown and Danielle Black; and son-in-law, John "Taz" Jessen.
She is survived by son, Ronald and wife, Karen Black of McKinney, Texas: and daughters: Judy and husband, Bill Brewer, Denise and husband, Clait Price and Jenise Jessen of Carlsbad; sisters: Lorene Plaster and Maxine Davis of Amarillo, Texas, Florene Alato of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Oleta Sparks of Whitesboro, Texas; and brothers: Vernon Woodall of Amarillo, Texas, and Jimmy Woodall of Paris, Texas; as well as 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren: Richard Brown, C.W. Price Jr., Vance Simer, Kevin Black, Michael Black and John Eric Jessen.
