EMMA CRAIG Obituary

CORTLAND – Emma Verda Craig, 82, of Cortland, Ill., passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2010, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb. Verda had fought and won her first battle with cancer in 2000 and had just learned that this fight would need to be undertaken again.

She was born on Feb. 7, 1928, in Hampton, Iowa, to Charles and Charlotte (Cook) Kughn. Verda married Robert E. "Bob" Craig on Jan. 30, 1955, at First United Methodist Church in Dixon, Ill. They spent the first 17 years of their life together in Dixon before moving to Cortland in 1973.

Verda was a registered nurse for 44 years. She was first employed at Katherine Shaw Bethesda Hospital in Dixon, then at DeKalb Public Hospital. She ultimately retired in November 1993 from Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb. She volunteered her time with the American Red Cross Blood Mobile and various events through the Cortland Lions Club.

She was an active member of Cortland United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her close group of friends for lunches and various other recreational activities this group participated in, including gatherings at Aldis Park. Verda was a warm and gentle person and always willing to offer her assistance to those needing her loving care and compassion.

Verda was very proud of her family. She enjoyed spending time with them, whether it be down on the farm, on the exotic beaches of Hawaii or Mexico or family dinners during the holidays. She also enjoyed reading and watching "her" Chicago Bulls.

Verda is survived by her three children, Jerry (Becky) Craig of Mequon, Wis., Linda (Bill) Tobias of Carthage, Ill., and Jim (Kim) Craig of Prior Lake, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Nikki, Sarah, Andy, Michael, Jonathan, Joseph and Shelby; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Verda is now at rest and has joined her husband, Bob; her son, Steve; her parents and two sisters in eternal peace.

Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22 at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. A celebration of her life will immediately follow at 11 a.m at Anderson Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. For information, please call 815-756-1022 or visit AndersonFuneralHomeLtd.com.

I have many fond memories of spending time at the Craig household when I was growing up in Cortland as well as many fond memories of working with your mother at Kishwaukee Hospital. She always caught me off guard with her sly sense of humor. God bless you all and may he be with you in your time of sorrow.

So sorry to hear of your mothers passing. You can take consolation, to borrow Jerry's words, that she is now skipping down the streets of Glory!!!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To Verda's family, may your memories of her keep your heart comforted. I remember Verda from our days at Kish Hospital working together on the Medical floor. She had a way of saying things that one had to stop and think and then see the twinkle in her eye to catch the humor. She will be greatly missed.
