James Rhoades Obituary

James (Jim) Alan Rhoades
Born: February 10, 1950 in DeKalb, IL
Died: March 30, 2025 in DeKalb, IL
James (Jim) Alan Rhoades, of DeKalb, was born February 10th, 1950 in DeKalb, Illinois. He was the son of Robert and Betty (McKinley) Rhoades. Jim died Sunday, March 30, 2025 at home surrounded by family after a recent diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma.
Jim attended DeKalb schools graduating from DeKalb High School in 1968. He became an Eagle Scout in 1964, and has supported the Boy Scouts ever since. While in high school, he participated in three sports, football, basketball, and baseball. He received the honor of most valuable player in football his senior year. One of Jim's highlights was being a member of the basketball team that went 'Down State in '68!', winning fourth place in the State Tournament.
After high school, Jim attended Northern Illinois University on a football scholarship, playing as a Huskie for two years. This started his love of NIU football and he has been a lifelong season ticket holder. To fulfill his love of flying, Jim earned his pilot license. He was recently recognized for serving 43 years on the City of DeKalb Airport Advisory Board. On August 8th, 1971 Jim joined the DeKalb Police Department serving as a patrol officer for 13 years prior to his promotion to Detective. Jim retired on Friday, March 1st, 2002 only to return on Monday, March 4th as a part-time Community Service Officer and Evidence Room Tech. His attention to detail served him well as he continued to process evidence until his recent diagnosis. This credits Jim in his 53rd year of employment, honoring him as the longest serving employee in the history of the DeKalb Police Department. When asking Jim about his time as an officer he simply replied, "I like solving crime."
On July 22nd, 1972 Jim married his sweetheart, Sharon (Bush) Rhoades, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeKalb on a hot and humid day. They later welcomed Kristina and Melissa building a legacy which started as the 'Fab 4'. Jim and Sharon have celebrated 52 years of marriage, keeping busy through travel, spending time in Florida, enjoying the peacefulness of the cabin, attending every 1968 class reunion, cheering on the Huskies, tasting fabulous meals with their 'Dinner Club', spending time with the 'Empty Nesters', enjoying time at the condo in Fontana, Wisconsin, and being a supporter first at all of Kristina and Melissa's activities, and then all of the grandkid's various games and events.
Jim's simple pleasures in life were hunting with his hunting buddies, taking care of the family farm in Astoria, IL, Pizza Villa (thin crust sausage and onion), NASCAR, a cocktail, playing Angry Birds, campfires, a mug of ice, his mom's spaghetti, telling jokes, Boppa's chair, mowing on the riding lawn mower, morel mushroom hunting, Wheel of Fortune, daily Wordle, and Butterfinger Blizzards, but his greatest joy in life was his family. Jim cherished family time spent at the cabin, yearly summer vacations to Michigan and later Door County, and his most loved 'Sunday Suppers' where he got to spend time with his grandkids every week. His loving relationships with each of his grandkids earned him the title "Boppa". He taught them each the importance of dedication, kindness, and humor.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon, daughters Kristina (Ryan) Walter of Sugar Grove, and Melissa (Zach) Beck of DeKalb. Six grandchildren Andrew, Ethan, and Lauren Walter, and Lily, Gabby, and Maddy Beck. Sister-in-law Anne (Chuck) Quinlan, nephew Tim Quinlan and family, and niece Lisa (Kevin) Brown and family, and his Rhoades Cousins. He leaves behind beloved friends who were like a family to him and his City of DeKalb Police family. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, and his in-laws Dave and Margaret Bush.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dhaval Thakkar, Dr. George Zaverdas, Dr. Edward Telfer, and the many kind nurses who cared for him. One of Jim's last wishes was to thank those who stopped by, called, sent a text, made food, or prayed for him in his final weeks.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Rhoades Family to establish a scholarship for a DeKalb High School graduate pursuing a career in law enforcement.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 13th from 12:30-3:00pm at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 615 N. First St, DeKalb. Funeral service will begin at 3:00pm. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Fairview Park Cemetery. The family would like to invite family and friends to join them for Sunday Supper celebrating Jim's life, further details provided at the service.
Arrangements were entrusted to Finch Funeral Home 310 Oak St. DeKalb, IL 60115 815-758-3841.

Dear Sharon and Family, I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing. Holding you in our thoughts. It has been many years since our childhood days, members of the school band, and teammates on our school football and baseball teams that hold memorable moments. A childhood friend who was kind, gentle, soft spoken and thoughtful. I remember the fun playing pool at his home, a pool table he was proud of. Terrific athlete. I cannot claim attending every high school reunion, as Jim, however grateful for the 25th and 50th, and to have spent some time with Jim. Thankful for cherished memories that remain with us always, and knowing that those memories will give you and your family strength at this time. Such a loving obituary. Thank you for sharing such a fulfilling and rich life that Jim lived. Sincerely and with sympathy, Mike Gutesha

I am so sorry about Jim. I was appointed to The Airport Advisory Board in 2001. Jim really helped me learn the ropes. He was the kindest, soft-spoken person I have met. It was hard to believe he was on the Police Force for so long with his kind demeaner.

Jim placed my name for Chairman of the Airport Advisory Board. So, he must have seen something in me. He and I received recognition awards for Length of service on the Airport Board recently.

He will be truly, truly missed. I Pray that GOD will send Angels of Peace and Comfort to his family. extended Family and Friends.
Sincerely,
Bob Owens

Sharon and family
Babs and I are saddened to hear of Jim‘s passing. Heck we have been classmates and friends with you and Jim for almost 60 years. Jim was one heck of an athlete. I still enjoy telling the story about Jim being a punishing hitter on the football field. We were playing Wheaton high school, and it’s fourth and goal and very little time left in the game. Wheatons halfback was an Allstate kid and he got the ball and came through the line. I missed the tackle and as I turned around I saw Jim hit this kid so hard, his mouthpiece landed at my feet! We won the game. This is just one story of many that as friends we can celebrate the memories. He will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. We lived in DeKalb for many years and my daughter Erin and Melissa were best of friends and my wife and I were your and Jim’s friends as well. We treasured our times in DeKalb. We shared many great times at church, in the choir and rooting for our kids at soccer games. Jim was always such a wonderful person and supportive Dad. I know very well what Jim struggled with as I have been fighting stage IV Urothelial cancer since March of 2023. God only knows how much time I have, but I will continue to fight for all those who have lost their battle. It’s a hideous disease that I hope is eradicated from the face of this earth soon! My heart goes out to Sharon, Melissa, Kristina and your entire extended family. May Jim rest in peace in God’s arms in eternity.

It was such an honor and privilege to get to know and work with Jim for the last 12 years, and his shoes at DeKalb PD will not soon be filled. I only hope I'm able to leave behind a legacy even half as big as Jim's. Much love and continued prayers for the entire family. May God bless you all.

I would like to share a little memory: At Glidden School Jim was already an accomplished athlete. I felt pretty proud of myself when I managed to tag him out in a gym class whiffle ball game. Sharon: Dale and I are keeping your whole family in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Sharon and family - I’m so sorry for your loss. Jim was always kind to me, I enjoyed our time together at the tailgates, and I know how much he and you meant to my parents. What a great obituary - I knew he was a good man but didn’t realize that he continued to work for the PD or that he was a pilot. Thinking of you during this sad time.

So long my friend. I was part of the Dinner Club along with my wife and Jim's high school classmate Karen (Burright) Gilbert. First time I met Jim was on the baseball field. I'm from Rochelle and it was always a great game against the guys from DeKalb. Jim had a great sense of humor and we enjoyed antagonizing each other whenever we got together, whether at my place in Wisconsin, his cabin in southern Illinois, or the Dinner Club. I'll truly miss him. So sudden, so sad. My prayers are with Sharon, the family, and the hundreds of friends he made.
