Joyce Markham Obituary
Mrs. Markham was born in Pasquotank County on March 24, 1945, and was the daughter of the late Raymond Lee and Sarah Elizabeth Cartwright Evans.
Joyce married the love of her life, Marion Frank "Marty" Markham on June 17, 1961. Mrs. Markham dedicated 38 years of her life as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Elizabeth City. Some of those years were spent working in the CCU at Albemarle Hospital. She finished her career at Children's Clinic, now Coastal Pediatrics before retiring. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Another membership she enjoyed included the Matoaca Council #10 Degree of Pocahontas. She had many hobbies she enjoyed: traveling with family, shopping, and photography.
In addition to her loving husband of 63 years, Marty, Joyce is survived by: a daughter, Elizabeth Rene Markham of Elizabeth City; a son, Kevin Ray Markham (wife, Tanya) of Pittsboro; a brother, Raymond Earl "Squirrel" Evans (wife, Sheila) of Elizabeth City; a sister, Kay Sawyer (husband, Baxter, deceased) of Shawboro; seven grandchildren, Ryan Byrum (wife, Erin), Sara Byrum, Michael Doukas, Melina Doukas, Sydney Markham, Alex Markham and Nathalie Markham; a great-grandson, Graysen Byrum; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A special thank you to Diana McClanahan, Annie Whidbee, and all the staff at Albemarle Home Care and Hospice for the exceptional care shown to Mrs. Markham.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. Friends visited with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service and other times at the residence. A private burial followed in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints, 600 W. Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
