Alvin Lowi Obituary

July 21 1929 - December 17 2021 Alvin Lowi Jr., long-time resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, died peacefully at home on December 17th at age 92. He was born in Gadsden, Alabama on July 21, 1929 to Alvin R. Lowi and Janice Haas Lowi and attended Gadsden public schools. Alvin matriculated at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a BSME degree in Mechanical Engineering, where he later also earned his MS. Following graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy to serve an NROTC military commitment. He served as a midshipman on the U.S.S. Iowa, for which he was honored as a Plank Owner. During the Korean War, Alvin served as an engineering officer on steam and diesel vessels in the Pacific Fleet Amphibious Forces, participating in and was decorated for the amphibious assault on Inchon. While stationed in San Diego, California, he met and married Guillermina (Mina) Gerardo Alvarez with whom he was married for 59 years until her death in 2012. Upon his return to Los Angeles, Alvin was immediately hired by the AiResearch Division of the Garrett Corporation as a preliminary design engineer. He entered private practice in 1966 launching a long career as a professional engineer and consultant. Alvin also wrote passionately and extensively on topics relating to free enterprise, private property, autonomy, the scientific method, and the nature of personal freedom and coercion in society. You may explore his work at his website: https://www.alvinlowi.net/index.html He is survived by his children: Rosamina (Leonard Deluna), Edna Vivian (Victor Honma), and Alvin III (Carolyn Lowi), and Mina's son from a previous marriage, David Arthur, whom Alvin adopted; grandchildren (David Anthony Lowi, Leo Ikin, Fay Ikin, Ralph Lowi, Daphne Honma, Alec Jonathan Lowi, and Austin Jacob Lowi); great grandchildren (Carly Lowi, Laine Lowi, Henry Sampson Lowi and Paul Neruda Lowi); his siblings Bertram Haas Lowi, Janice Horn and Bettie Baer, and a large number of nieces, nephews, grands, cousins, and friends who considered him their family. Service will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes, California on Saturday January 22, 2022, followed by a gathering at his home on Toscanini Drive.

Al Lowi was a good man and I was honored to invest in Terraqua. I knew his wife and many of his friends (good people) while I was working in San Pedro, CA

I am sad to learn that Alvin Lowi has passed. He was a extraordinary man, a brilliant engineer, a gracious host and a good friend. A conversation with Alvin was always interesting and you would be certain to learn something new.

I will not forget first meeting him at his home in California, the long conversations that ensued and his capacity to surprise. He invited me to a lunch to meet some friends and what a lunch it was. There were engineering royalty present at that restaurant that day. Wonderful conversations. Tremendous fun. Fabulous memories. Pure gold.

There are people whose presence in this world makes it a better place for everyone else. Alvin Lowi was one of those few.

Thank you Alvin.
