Benjamin Dragich Obituary

Dragich, Benjamin
Age 31, passed away tragically of natural causes at his home in Lawndale on February 24, 2007.Ben was born Benjamin Ray Piasecki on December 6, 1975, at Torrance Memorial Hospital in Torrance, CA. Like most children who grew up in the Beach Cities, he spent his summers at the beach boogie boarding, snorkeling and spear fishing, eventually learning to surf at the age of seven. Ben attended school locally at First Baptist Preschool, Alta Vista Elementary School, Hillcrest Middle School and Redondo Union High School. It was while at RUHS his love for swimming and aquatics rewarded him with a coveted spot on the men's varsity water polo team while still only a sophomore. A natural-born athlete, he helped lead his team to many wins and still holds the RUHS record for swimming the 200 medley relay in 1993.After Ben graduated in 1994, he joined the workforce as a prolific waiter employed at many different local restaurants around the South Bay. He continued to surf daily and pursued other pastimes like snowboarding and eventually found himself as the charismatic lead vocalist in a rock band that performed at many popular South Bay venues, in time becoming a local favorite. At the age of 25, and determined to be his own boss, Ben transformed his apprenticeship as tile-setter into his own lucrative construction business using his talents as a skilled tradesman to create and give back to his community until his passing. All the while he continued to challenge himself athletically, adding new activities like motocross-style dirt-bike riding to his already impressive list of talents. However, it was his singular passion for surfing that persevered and motivated him to travel the world where the waves are legendary. Ben traveled with friends to Brazil, Costa Rica and, most recently, to Hawaii on the North Shore where he successfully took on impressive 20-foot swells.Ben was the golden light of a shining summer sun, and his departing is a permanent shadow on all our hearts.Ben is survived by his loving mother, Patricia; Oma Louise; beloved Tante Inka; Oom Robert; Oom Andre; 7 great-aunts; 3 great-uncles; 65 cousins; and a legion of loyal friends.Memorial services will be held on March 10, 2007, at 11a.m. on the beach at 2nd Street in Hermosa with a paddle-out in his honor. Immediately following services, there will be a gathering at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach King Harbor to reflect and celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, Ben's family requests contributions be made to the Benjamin Dragich Memorial Fund c/o Wells Fargo Bank. Attn: Conrad 1103 G Street, Arcata, CA 95521. I have just learned of Bens passing and I am very shocked and sad. I knew Ben in our teenage years and I had some crazy times with him. I spent many mornings surfing ave e with him, spearfishing in kelp beds along pv, creating huge fires with gasoline on his back patio made of wood. Through all the memories that I have of Ben in every one he is smiling, laughing, and having a good time. I want to be more llike Ben. Aloha buddy, I'll miss you in this life.

Patricia and Ben
I want to thank you two again for taking me under your wing for the past 17 years, I would not be where I am without you. I am having a hard time seeing my future without ben so I am just going to know that he is there in all we do, in our hearts. Patricia, you have always been like a mother to me and probably all of bens friends and I will always be here for you. I am so sorry but I will not say goodbye, just farewell my best friend Ben, I will see you again one day.

Rest in Peace Ben! I was saddened to learn of your recent passing.

We didn't know each other very well, but I always found your personality to be genuine and engaging during our limited interactions with each other through mutual friends, hanging out at parties over at Alex and Steffan's, or taking in one of Blindside's infectious grooves.

From what others who knew you better have posted here, it appears to me that you managed to pull off rather admirably what most of us can not; balancing levity with purpose. In that sense, I think you will remain timeless in the eyes of those who knew you best as a unique blend of sincere personality and determination.

Dear Patricia, Ihave so many wonderful memories with Ben - surfing Torrance beach and El Porto - cruising up and down the coast between San Deago and Santa Barbara looking for the perfect wave - talking with Him about His business/life. Lieve Patricia,
We met Benji when he was still a small boy, at the age of four or five at Inka's. It was the first time, but also the lasr time. Tante Els and I were shocked when we got the message. You lost your son and we our nephew. But reading the messages in this guest book, we notice, that Benji was loved and respected by his family and friends. May he rest in peace. Patty, tante Els and oom Broer love you and we hope that you can find the strength to go on.

Ben came by Ron's house in Redondo during Christmas of 2006. He wanted to take Nell and I out to breakfast like old times. He was talking about his life and how much fun he had at Hill St. in Hermosa. He made a point of treating me because he had eaten at my house so much and appreciated being treated like "another son." I will always treasure his smiling face and his beautiful curly hair. Fondly, Pattie Sue Macon-Orr

I didn't know Ben as well as most of you, I'm sure, but what I always loved about him was his simple honesty. The vibe I always got from him was love life and love the people in it. If you can do that with all your heart, then we can be thankful for the life that we were able to live. I'm glad I was able to know Ben and my thoughts are with everyone who loved him.

John and I will always love Ben like a brother. Ben has moved on and we will all miss him very much. He was an inspiration to myself and all who knew him. His demeanor was infectious and his smile contagious. He excelled in the things he loved and pushed his friends to new heights with his enthusiasm. I feel very fortunate to have been graced by his friendship and know their are none who don't share the same sentiment. Words cannot explain the sorrow I feel with his passing. We will forever miss his humor and laughter, his style and swagger, the stories he shared and the times we had together. You will always be with us in the water, on the wave, on the trail, in our songs and in our hearts.

I will truly miss you my friend and I am sincerely sorry to all that knew him, as we were all robbed of a very special person.
Love, John R. Hogan
