I came across John´s obituary while curious about whether he had encountered the Marshall fire. I came to John´s lab many times and worked with him on analysis, I knew he had retired a few years ago but had no idea his health was deteriorating. I am deeply sympathetic about the family´s loss, John was easygoing and thoughtful, and I missed not seeing him to chat about random topics, after his retirement.

John was such a presence, his cheerful spirit truly filled a room and lifted you up. I can still hear his distinctive laugh & voice when I think about him.
My sincere sympathies to his family on this anniversary of John's passing.

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I know you had a wonderful life with John, full of adventure and fun. May your loving memories comfort you at this sad time. I was your postal carrier for many years and always enjoyed chatting with you.

My heart goes out to you all in John's immediate family--Anne, Emma, Alice and all. I can only begin to imagine how difficult it must be for you all right now. He was truly taken too soon.
Although I only had the privilege of living in the same city and seeing John often when my family and I lived in Boulder between 1978 and 1983, he made such an impact on me that even only seeing him a handful of times since then, I've continued to think about him fondly, and always considered him to be one of our family's closest friends.
Since I was a young teenager at the time I lived there, he was very close friends with my parents. However he was younger than my folks, so he was like a really cool uncle or big brother, and even good friend-to both myself and my brother Doug.
John had such a positive, cheerful energy about him, and what a great laugh! He was kind, funny, intelligent, and down to earth.
I regret not having the chance to visit in person with John over the years more often, nor his family, and being unable to get out there from California for his memorial.
The world is truly shining a little less brightly without John in it.
