Richard Weiman Obituary

Longtime Boulderite Richard Weiman passed away peacefully in his residence on June 17, 2023. He was 68. Born March 12th, 1955 in West Orange, NJ to Robert Weiman and Ruth Kram Weiman, Richard grew up in the city of his birth, graduating from West Orange High School in 1973. He went on to study at Trinity College (Hartford, CT), earning a degree in Philosophy in 1978. Richard married Teresa Kay Smith on May 10th, 1983 in Golden, CO. He studied at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy, but ultimately decided a career in real estate was a more beneficial option for a man about to raise a family. Originally settling in Denver, Richard began working for Century 21; in 1988, he moved to Boulder and worked with Walnut Realty until 2000. Having divorced in 1999, Richard was now a single dad raising two sons, Jason and Derek. As he remained involved in real estate, he continued to be an integral force in their upbringing, coaching the boys in sports and instilling in them a deep appreciation for music. Jason traded baseball for golf and quickly showed an aptitude; Richard followed soon after. Derek dove headfirst into music, especially after meeting Victor Wooten, bassist for Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. The family met him while Richard was volunteering at Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and they have since formed a special bond. Richard developed a unique friendship with Victor, whom he likened to his spiritual teacher. Derek, a guitarist, benefitted greatly from the combined influences of Richard and Victor, and by middle school was playing onstage with Ozomati and The Derek Trucks Band. Fittingly, Jason would develop into a professional golf coach and Derek a professional musician. An accomplished musician himself, Richard began with the trumpet, then progressed through piano, guitar and, ultimately, mandolin, the instrument he most cherished. Throughout his adult life, Richard participated in bluegrass jams up and down Colorado's Front Range. In 2009, he began dating Helen Dohrman, with whom he'd been friends for years. The two shared a passion for music festivals, traveling home and abroad to attend. All the while, they talked about the meaning of life and loved each other along the way. Richard was impassioned with golf. He recorded three holes-in-one during his lifetime, was crowned Club Champion of the Omni Interlocken Golf Club (Broomfield, CO), and teamed with Jason to win the season-long Ambush tournament in 2015. Perhaps most notably, Richard broke 80 at Flatirons Golf Course during his final earthly round. As much as Richard loved music and golf, the role of father was his true passion. Jason recalls, "My dad taught me to be present, to let my actions speak, and to adhere to The Golden Rule in life. He loved music, golf and people, and he believed we should pursue our passions. He is missed." Derek relates, "I enjoyed playing music with him and making him laugh. We were best friends." Richard, in nearly every possible way, acted in the interests of friends and loved ones. He cooked with impeccable timing, gave incredible massages, mentored pool teammates, and visited hospitalized friends. When his favorite bar was about to close, Richard found a way to buy it just to keep it open because he knew how many friends would be devastated to see it shuttered. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas Weiman (d. 2000). He is survived by his sons, Jason Travis Weiman (Boulder, CO) and Derek Robert Weiman (Boulder, CO), his former wife, Teresa Kay Smith (Asheville, NC), and his partner, Helen Dohrman (Boulder, CO). A celebration of Richard's life will take place from 4:30 - 7:00pm on Sunday, August 13th at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club (800 Eldorado Blvd., Broomfield, CO 80021). Heavy hors 'oeuvres will be provided with a cash bar. Dress casually. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Richard's favorite charity, KGNU Community Radio (kgnu.org).

I very belatedly read of Richard's passing in the Trinity Reporter. I graduated a year ahead of him but I remember hanging out together particularly if music was involved. I wish we had stayed in touch as our lives seem to have quite a few parallels - music (especially bluegrass), coaching baseball and even a real estate career. I am sorry for your loss. He was a good man back then and apparently throughout his life. I hope his family and friends have good memories to fall back on.

Playing music with Richard, and later Derick, at festivals for decades has always been a highlight of the year. He was always the first I sought at Rockygrass, where this year I found out that what I have now are these cherished memories. I know he was just as special to many others and we are blessed to have had time with him.

I am grateful for the honor of Richard's friendship over the years. I appreciated his passion for music and pool shooting, and his love and pride for his beautiful, brilliant sons. What a great father, friend, philosopher, lover of life. My heart goes out to everyone who loved him.

Richard your smile and massive support for our community will be missed greatly. I will never forget the moment we met at Rockygrass over 20 years ago and you welcomed us with open arms. I raise my cup of coffee to you and will dance my next jig in your honor!

Richard was a beautiful human being and one of the most loving and devoted parents I have ever known. His support of his sons, especially Derek who is a dear friend and musical brother was truly exceptional. We played together many times and enjoyed long rambling discussions about music as well as running into each other at shows. I was lucky enough to have he, Derek and Jason as neighbors for a while and will miss him terribly whenever I´m home visiting. Long may you run my friend and thank you for your friendship and support. Boulder will not be the same without you.

Heartfelt condolences to Derek, Helen, Jason and the vast family of people Richard embraced during his time on the planet. His easy to talk to demeanor and inquisitive nature will be genuinely missed. Playing music, singing songs for young and old to join in was second nature for Richard. When other players got competitive, he could always be counted on to keep his sense of humor and remind folks not take it all so seriously. Life isn´t always perfect or easy. Richard faced life´s challenges with an open heart and never give up attitude. Such a mensch! In the abbreviated words of Victor Wooten, "He may not be here...Heaven is where the heart is"...I will miss him and our conversations.
