Gerald D. "Jerry" Lucia, 76, of Mount Pleasant, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, in Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mount Pleasant.
He was born July 30, 1945, in Scottdale, a son of the late Patrick and Mary Costabile Lucia.
Jerry was a member of the first graduating class of Geibel High School in 1964. Early in his life he was employed by the Klocek Burial Vault Company in Mount Pleasant.
He later worked at the former Volkswagen Plant in New Stanton where he served as a Benefits Representative. He then returned to the Vault Company where he retired as the manager for many years. Jerry was also currently working with the Mount Pleasant Removal Service.
Jerry served the Mount Pleasant Borough as its elected mayor for 36 years, having just won another four-year term that would have made 40. He also served on Borough Council for six years. He was a 46-year member of the Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department serving as chief, currently, and for 31 years.
Jerry was an active community, regional and statewide public servant. He was named Pennsylvania State Mayor of the Year in 2016. Besides fire chief, he was Emergency Management Coordinator for 31 years. Jerry was a volunteer at the Mount Pleasant Food Bank, past board member of the Frick-Excela Hospital, present member of the Frick Foundation Board, past board member of the YMCA, past president of the Westmoreland County Boroughs Association, past president of the Westmoreland County Fire Chief's Association, Co-Founder and co-chairman of the Mount Pleasant Glass and Ethnic Festival and Chairman of the Annual Firemen's Fair.
Jerry was also coordinator for the borough Christmas Lights Installation and he successfully obtained Funding for Mount Pleasant's beautiful Veteran's Park and he instituted the construction of the Gazebo in Mount Pleasant. He was active in youth football and baseball for many years and of particular note in his many years of public service he was proud that he was absent for only four meetings. He was named Mount Pleasant's Citizen of the Year in 2006.
Jerry was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant. He is survived by his wife, Diana Dublinsky Lucia; his son, Gerald "Jerry" Lucia of Mount Pleasant; his daughter, Nicole Butts and her husband John of Greencastle, Pa.; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Christopher and Krystal Lucia and Claire, Caroline and Morgan Butts; one sister, Patricia Midden of Ligonier; brotherin law, Robert McGuinness of Normalville; niece, Pam Rendine and her husband Gerard and their family of Ligonier and a nephew, Jeff McGuiness and his wife Kelly and their family of Mount Pleasant.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by a sister, Annette McGuinness; brother, Joseph Lucia and a brother-inlaw Hank Midden.
Family and friends will be received in the Brooks Funeral Home, Inc., 406 E. Washington St., Mount Pleasant on Monday from 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. where a Blessing Service will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X R.C. Church with Rev. Richard Kosisko as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Visitation Cemetery. The Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
