Condolences on your loss. As a young undergraduate at Humboldt, I worked for Gordon that summer at Eagle Lake collecting data. That experience was one reason I pursued my own graduate studies and developed a career in natural resource management. I will forever be grateful for that opportunity. To this day I cannot look at a western grebe or hear the call of a redwing blackbird without thinking of Gordon.

Sarah, this is a hard day for both of us. I can't believe Jigs has been gone a year. I just remember him as so hale and hardy. Remember when Bob went with him on a triathalon in So Cal? Bob was so amazed at his prowess? Bob is still in the hospital and we met with palliative care yesterday. Karen and I decided to bring him home and receive hospice. Rehab is not an option and he would hate a nursing home. Soon he'll be with Jigs again. It seems like forever since we were at Echo Lake during the good days and I know Bob's memories of Jigs go back decades. It's sad to think we will only have memories of these two guys who were so bonded together for 60 years. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I feel really close to you, Love and hugs, Cheryl

Gordon and I shared offices during 1978-1982 at DFG. One of the hardest working professionals I met, he set high standards for Avery one, including himself. A driving force behind raptor protection in California, especially owls, Gordon became the resident expert on Spptted Owls. One of his 'other related duties' was to compile a database on Northern Spotted Owl territories and nests. We partnered in a digital application that was critical in the evaluation of timber harvest projects in California.
Over the years with DFG Gordon provided mentorship and encouragement to a generation of temporary and volunteer assistants, many of whom went on to successful careers in agency and private positions. In meetings and training sessions he led well organized and effective exercises. And, he was always available to comment on or edit materials in prep be peers.
In retirement I no longer enjoy the partnerships we had and the successes we achieved. Representative of a professional era at DFG (DFW), he is missed.

I met my closest friend, Jigs, 68 years ago in Mrs. Beacon's second grade class. Since the natural intimacy between us has endured regardless of times of separation. It is something that is there, even now.

He remains with me as a man of honesty, sincerity, loyalty, athleticism, talent, and a fellow who appreciates the corniest of jokes. Some roots of his love of and devotion to wildlife no doubt arose in our camping/boating trips with my parents to Lake Shasta over a five year period.

His fascination with racing was first expressed in appreciation for grand prix and sports car racing. In earlier years his hand carved and carefully painted replicas of cars that raced are known to few, but amazing. Eventually he obtained a Volvo that resembled a '47 Ford. He tore down and rebuilt the engine and got it running again with an assist from mechanically talented dad. He eventually found his way to be on some pit crews and even conned a few practice laps at Laguna Seca raceway in his now "warmed over" Volvo. Down the line he became a force in racing one man sailboats. Then it was onto Triathlon.

Written memories arising from our friendship would consume enough pages to equate resemble a book. They are an indelible part of me. How fortunate I am, as are so many others he touched, to have him with me now.

Sarah, you and Gordon are one of the best memories that I have being at Prairie, Our talks for what was going on made me feel so special. I feel for you what you went though at the end, it is hard to watch our very intelligent men, so strong, lose that which make you love them so much. Take care my friend, Kitty

I have such great memories of Jigs. He knew my husband, Bob Dickinson, since the second grade and Jigs was his nickname. He was the best man at our wedding which is the first time I met him. His love of animals is what I remember most. He had well trained black labs. His were superior because of him, he could actually tell his dog, "game over" and his dog would drop the ball and lay down.

When we stayed at his and Sarah's house in recent years the photos of their travels were exceptional. They are the kind you see in National Geographic, close ups of wild animals in their habitats. Sarah I think of those photos as a tribute to Jigs and what was closest to his heart and his mission in life. You are fortunate to have those memories.

I love you both and will miss him...Hugs,Cheryl Dickinson
