Russell Robert (Bob) Hansen reached the end of a long and happy life on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011. He was 86.
Bob was born in Tilden, Neb., on Oct. 18, 1924. At age 12, he moved with his parents and younger brother to Olympia, Wash., and then to Pasadena. He met his future wife, Suzanne Walker Hansen, in high school and the two were married in 1946. Bob attended UCLA, where he played football. He served in the Naval Medical Corps during World War II, then attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. After completing his residency in pediatrics at UCSF in 1955, he moved with his family to Woodland to begin his practice at the Woodland Clinic.
Known as "Dr. Handsome" by some of his patients, Bob was a tremendously skilled and dedicated pediatrician who cared for generations of Yolo County children. He loved his work and loved being an active member of his community. Positive in spirit and generous with his time, he served on the Woodland Hospital Medical Advisory and Governing Boards, the Woodland School Board and, after retiring, provided many hours of service to the CommuniCare Clinics. He was honored with the John H. Jones Medical Community Award. Bob was a sports enthusiast, an avid gardener, tennis player, and traveler. Above all, he and his wife Suzanne were deeply devoted to their family and friends.
Bob is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Carroll and Sheila Hansen, and his four children and their families: Robin Hansen and Gordon Ulrey, Heather, Brad and Lucy Ballinger, and Lindsay Ulrey; Robert and Kari Hansen, Greta Hansen and Juan Carlos Montoy, Luciana Hansen-Montoy, Walker Hansen, and Callia Hansen; Mark and Chris Hansen, and Taylor, Katie and Haley Hansen; Heidi Hansen and Brooks, Skyler and Galen Dougherty.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East St. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Yolo Hospice, CommuniCare Health Centers, the Food Bank of Yolo County or a charity of the donor's choice.

Dr. Hansen is not forgotten. JoAnne, my sister, was the first patient of Dr. Hansen. Mother was so pleased and spoke of him with great admiration. Blessings to him and to all the family. As he is in Heaven, smiling.

Dr. Hansen was the pediatrician for my brother and I in the days when doctors made house calls. He was an amazing and caring physician and touched many lives throughout his life. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Hansen Family: Dr. Hansen is one of my faviorite people to remember from my childhood. As our family story goes, I was born on Dr. Hansen's first day of work at the Woodland Hospital and became his first patient in the new town. What a cornerstone to the town your wonderful father became! JoAnne Eve Ellsworth

Dr. Hansen was the most sensitive and patient doctor; the best ever for children. No question was ever too silly. Lucky Hansen family to have him as a Dad and Grandfather; lucky for my family you shared him. My sympathy to you all at this sad time.
