Alfred Moses Obituary

Alfred G Moses, 93, of Shokan, NY, passed away on May 21, 2022.Born on July 24, 1928, in Utica, NY, to Najala and Gabriel Moses, Alfred spent his youth tinkering with engines and upholstery, and quit high school to join the New York State Guard, then the US Army-Air Force, expecting to learn to repair airplanes. Instead, the Army made him a clerk. He got his GED and went to SUNY Oswego to study transportation. He earned a Master’s in teaching at University of Florida where he met Judith Andersen, and went on to teach printshop, transportation, ceramics, and textiles for 29 years in New York’s Onteora School System. Al and Judy married in 1955, and designed and built their home in Shokan, NY, in 1958. Polio struck Judy in 1961. During her nearly year-long recovery and rehabilitation, Al took care of their one-year-old daughter while also guiding his students. Al’s skills served them all well, as he added on to the house, put in a convalescent swimming pool, outfitted the house with conveniences for her new wheelchair mobility, and built a second garage. In the summer of 1966 he drove the family 14,000 miles around the entire United States over 52 days, overnighting in a home-built tent camper contraption. It went so well they did it six more times, in a small travel trailer, visiting all of the lower 48 states. In 1969, Al earned his private pilot’s license, and joined a flying club.In later summers, they parked their trailer in Chincoteague, Virginia, and sometimes flew or drove to an airplane festival in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He rebuilt and flew a Stinson airplane. His students worked on some of the oldest airplanes in the world from the nearby Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. He built a Taylor Titch aircraft from scratch, machining some engine parts and carving the wood frame. He flew the family to Florida over several winter breaks. He and his son, Timothy, hiked and camped and canoed with the Boy Scouts. When his daughter went to the Coast Guard Academy in 1978, he bought a sailboat kit and learned sailing tips from her. In 1984 he and Judy retired, spending winters in Florida and summers in New York for the next 38 years. He is survived by his son, Timothy Moses (Cyndi), of Hainesport, New Jersey; daughter, Joy Hall (Richard), of Greenville, North Carolina; and five grandchildren: Griffin Moses-Hanson (Yari) and impending great grandson in Prescott, Arizona; Tucker Moses, of Richmond, Virginia; Rachel Printz (Stephen) of Greenville, NC; Shannon Hall of Greenville, NC; and Olivia Hall, of Raleigh, NC. A private Celebration of Life will be held on June 24 in North Carolina. Spread your wings, Dad, and soar! https://www.lastingmemories.com/alfred-moses

I am not quite sure about how to express in words how Mr Moses has effected my life but one thing I know for sure,he was a nice man and an outstanding educator and he sure was a big loss to that school when he retired. I last saw him in 1990 and had the good fortune to tell him personally what I have said here. I am proud to call him my friend.goodbye Mr Moses and I hope I see you again someday.

Thank you for all the years of friendship. I learned so many things from being in your class. One of the best times in school was your class in 1963. How fortunate I was to have known you. RIP

I took Industrial Arts instead of cooking in 10th grade, and I was the only girl in the class. I got NO special treatment until I turned in my final project and he kindly "overlooked" a mistake in calculation I had made, while still making sure I learned a valuable lesson from the mistake... "Measure twice, cut once." Keeping the family in my prayers.

Dear Joy and Timmy,
Sending you both my condolences and thoughts at this time. Both your parents were a positive guiding force in my childhood. I remember when my mom and us kids moved back to NY from Montana, your dad saw me in the hallway and said welcome back to the neighborhood with a big smile. That meant so much to a 16 yr old during a rough time
