Ronald Westervelt Obituary

Ronald Allan Westervelt SHOKAN- Ronald Allan Westervelt, 74, of Shokan, died Sunday, May 29, 2016, in North Canaan, Conn. as a result of an automobile accident. He was born on June 4, 1941 in Orange, N.J. He was the son of the late Allan and Muriel Cook Westervelt. He earned his B.S. at Syracuse University and his M.S. at Ithaca College in music education. He was employed by the Onteora School District from 1963 to 1997 as the Jr. High School Band Director and Elementary Band Director at the Phoenicia and Woodstock Schools where he taught his students to strive for excellence. After retiring, Mr. Westervelt played with weekly community ensembles which helped to foster the music program at SUNY Ulster. He was an excellent trumpet player and a wonderful asset to the Jazz Band, the Wind Ensemble, and the Community Band. Additionally, he performed many years with the Kingston Summer Concerts and was a former member of the Huguenot Brass Quintet. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 238-291 of Poughkeepsie and the Ulster County Music Educators Association. He enjoyed reading, boating and automobile mechanics, but found the most enjoyment in repairing and riding motorcycles. He was a member of the American Motorcyclist Association and the Empire Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. Mr. Westervelt was an active member of Bible Baptist Church in Lake Katrine where he served as a Trustee, a Worship Leader – singing and playing the stringed bass, an adult Sunday school teacher, and a lay preacher. Ronald was an active speaker and musician with his wife for Christian Womens’ Connections ranging from Canada to West Virginia. He was a faith-filled Christian whose daily life included reading the Bible, listening to a Bible broadcast called Grace To You, and praying with his loving wife. He was a faithful, protective and loyal husband and father. His zeal to do right and represent his Savior, Jesus Christ, to the best of his ability is Ronald’s lasting legacy. Surviving are his wife Dixie L. Manning Westervelt whom he married Aug. 3, 1963; his son, Russel and his wife Jenny along with their children: Bradley, Andy, Chad, and Derek; his son, Ryan and his wife Joanna along with their children: Brett and Avery; his daughter, Randi and her husband Phillip Parker along with their children: Phillip Jr. and their baby girl on-the-way; his sister, Lynda Schuler; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Helene Manning; and a nephew and two nieces. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Westervelt will be scheduled and announced at a future date. Mr. Westervelt is buried in Tongore Cemetery located in Olivebridge. The family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Bible Baptist Church 509 Main St. Ext., Lake Katrine, N.Y., 12449. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main St., Phoenicia. You may share a condolence with the family on Mr. Westervelt’s Memorial Page at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com

I just received the news about Ron's passing. He was an inspiration to me with his ease in playing in the upper register. From listening to him I was eventually able to extend my range. So Sorry.

This came as a real shock. I always respected Ron, not only for his musicianship, but his maturity which many of us lacked during our SU years. May god bless you, Dixie, in this difficult time.

I was so shocked and saddened when I learned of Ron's death. A tremendous loss. I have fun & fond memories of Ron in various musical situations (including his bass solo to my "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" not long ago) and the Ars Choralis trip to Europe in 2001. We'll all miss him greatly. So sorry.

One of the saddest days of my life was when I heard about Ron's tragic death. I was privileged to know him as my friend and to love him as my brother in Christ and co-laborer in ministry as his pastor from years gone by. He will be missed by all of us until we meet Jesus in the air! Praise the Lord!

So many fond memories of serving Jesus together! Recently I had old video tapes converted to DVD and the first recording was the very first VBS we did together at Kingston Alliance Church-I believe it was 2006. I didn't even remember taping it. So wonderful to watch both Ron and Dixie serving Jesus by sharing the Good News through music. Paul and I have been praying for healing for Dixie and comfort for all the loved ones who will miss Ron so much. Praise God, he is safe in the arms of Jesus.

While I was not actually a student of Mr. Westervelt, I knew him through my association with the Onteora music program. His oldest son, Russel, and I, overlapped by a year. He was a kind man who always had a word of encouragement. I also shared an additional association with him, as we were both Syracuse alumni. He will be missed.

Russel and Ryan, I think I speak for all your friends from Onteora when I say that we have your and your mother's back. We're here for you in this difficult time. We are hoping for your mother's recovery, and please do not hesitate to reach out to any one of us.
