Dominic Spano Obituary

Dominic F. Spano NiskayunaDominic F. Spano, 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday afternoon surrounded by his loving family. Dominic was born in Schenectady, a son of the late Francesco and Domenica Spano. Dominic honorably served his country in the Navy during WWII. Following his valiant services, he graduated from Siena College where he received his bachelor's in sociology. Dominic had a passion for food and worked in food sales and operations management for Heinz, Canteen, Interstate United and All Seasons Services. With this love of food came the avid collections of kitchen gadgets and cookbooks. He also had a great love for the New York Yankees. Dominic will be remembered for his quick wit and infectious smile, he was the epitome of a family man. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Frank C. Spano. Survivors include his beloved wife of 34 years, Kathy Gartlan Spano; devoted children, Mark Spano and his wife, Janice of Schenectady, Geraldine Golub and her husband, Jerel of Niskayuna, Lorraine Piechnik and her husband, Michael of Cary, NC; adoring grandchildren, Marisa, Benjamin, Chelsea, Katie, Dana and Kristi; sister, Josephine Frescatore; nieces, Donna Frescatore and Lisa Zadoorian; lifelong friend, Hugh Mallia; adoring canine companion, Rosie; several cousins and wonderful friends. Dominic's family would like to thank his caregivers, Lucas, Violet, Linda, Beth and all the staff at the Community Hospice for the loving, compassionate care shown to Dominic. Services will be held on Monday at 8 a.m. from the Ferrari Funeral Home, 1503 Union St. (at McClellan St.), then to St. Luke's Church, State St., where a Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Interment to follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Ferrari Funeral Home, Sunday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating Dominic's life will commence at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Dominic's memory to the Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady 12308; The Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York, 4 Pine West Plaza Suite 405, Albany 12205; or to the Lewis Golub MDA/ALS Regional Center, 19 Warehouse Row, Albany, 12205.
