Fanny Karamanos Obituary

Fanny Karamanos, 93, passed away peacefully on March, 25, 2023 after a long and gratifying life. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, Steve J. Karamanos.

She was born in Schenectady, New York on August 3, 1929 to Nicolette (Nellie) and James Moskos. She attended Linton High School, Schenectady, NY and graduated with a business degree from Vermont Junior College in Montpelier, Vt. Fanny was a devoted and lifelong member of her parish, St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Schenectady, New York. She served in many roles and was an active parishioner including Sunday School director and a member of the Philoptochos and Parish Council. Her involvement in the St. George's community brought her many friendships that lasted throughout her life.

Along with her husband, she was the owner and proprietor of The Turf Tavern Restaurant in Scotia, New York for 45 years. She was an active business partner, playing host, managing staff and greeting and seating generations of customers at the entrance. After her retirement to Saratoga Springs, New York, she served as a dedicated volunteer at Saratoga Hospital for 25 years in the community relations and marketing department. Along with her volunteer work, she was a devoted and lifelong sports fan, especially her beloved New York Yankees. It was fitting and appropriate that her passing was on Greek Independence Day and she shared the same fighting spirit as her Hellenic ancestors.

A devoted mother, Fanny is survived by her three loving daughters, Terry Karamanos of Osterville, MA and Miami Beach, FL, Nikki Karamanos of Centerville, MA and Susan Lunde of Maplewood, New Jersey along with her beloved grandchildren Stephen, Alexander, Andrew and Amelia and great grandson Cole. Her loving sons in law Richard (Dick) L. Lunde and Leo P. Gorman also survive her.

She was the daughter of James and Nicolette (Nellie) Moskos of Schenectady, New York and loving sister of Esther Spiotta of Maplewood, New Jersey, Georgia Assenheimer of Maplewood, New Jersey and cousin Bertha Baskous of Schenectady, New York who predeceased her.

Special thanks to the many caregivers at Saratoga Hospital, especially the palliative care team, as well as staff and aides at The Summit in Saratoga Springs, her home since 2017. All these kind and generous people supported her desire to live and remain independent until her final days.

Viewing hours will be held on Thursday, March 30th from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union Street, Schenectady, NY. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend the funeral Friday, March 31st at 10 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 107 Clinton Street, Schenectady, New York. Following the viewing, a Trisagion service will be conducted.

Burial will be at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady, NY. immediately following the church service.

At her request, in lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be directed to St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Schenectady or the charity of your choice.
