George Argay Obituary

George P. Argay, 77, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 13, 2023, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Queens, New York on July 7, 1946, to Louis and Mary Argay. A graduate of Connetquot High School, George grew up in Ronkonkoma and moved upstate in 1973. He proudly served his country in the US Army in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968, surviving the Tet Offensive.

George was a service technician for Sears for 35 years, retiring in 2001. He was a member of American Legion Post 234 in Ballston Spa where he served as Sergeant at Arms and VFW Post 358 in Ballston Spa where he was the bar manager. George enjoyed tinkering with cars, trucks, and engines of all kinds. He was well known as the Godfather of Truck Pulls at the Saratoga County Fair, where he not only competed but was willing to help anyone who needed a hand or just someone to chat with while they were waiting to pull. For many years he raced his jeep at the ice races on Lake George and the sand races at the Glad Rag Saloon. He went on many snowmobile adventures to Canada and on the local trails too. When he wasn't racing or working on some new motor, he could often be found having coffee at Dunkin Donuts or lunch with his buddies at the Route 50 Diner. We will all miss his stories and simple sense of humor.

He was predeceased by his son Daniel Argay, siblings Eileen Cashmore Israelian, John O. Argay, and Thomas Argay, and nephews John Argay and David Argay. George is survived by his wife of 53 years Liza Argay, daughter and son in law Ellen and Jason Armer, his beloved grandchildren Samuel and Paige Armer, who he was so proud of, sister in law Mary Ellen Russo, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday, August 17 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 18 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville.

Memorial contributions in memory of George may be made to the Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215.

The family would like to thank the Doctors and Staff at NYOH especially Dr. Courtney Bellomo, Dr. Howard Schlossberg, and Dr. Rahul Ravilla for their care and compassion.

So very sorry to hear about George. He was my pal at Sears, a voice of reason, a good friend. Liza, you and family are in my prayers.

So sorry to hear of George“s passing. I remember him and Ted always working on their jeeps and motors together. They were quite a pair years ago. My condolences to you, Liza, and the family. So sorry....

So sorry to hear of George's passing. We 4-wheeled and sand dragged together for many years. We always talked at the truck pulls and shared good times together. My condolences to his family and all of his many friends.
