Gilbert Wolfe Obituary

Gilbert 'Gibby' Wolfe Quaker StreetGilbert Gibby Wolfe, 95, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Gibby was born in Frankfort, NJ on April 17, 1919, a son of the late John and Eva Wolfe. He served in the in the United States Navy during WWII. Following the war, Gibby worked for GE while operating his farm in Quaker Street. It was on this farm that he built his diner known as Gibby's. The diner was an original mountain view stainless steel diner, shipped from New Jersey and opened in 1952. It is in operation today. The diner's success came from Gibby's clever and innovative cooking procedures that endure at the diner today. He was always looking for new and different items he could incorporate into the menu. Gibby led a busy life with the diner. During his lifetime, he was a Golden Gloves boxing champion, a professional bowler, a stock car owner, a club champion golfer, a Shriner, a mason, town Justice of the Peace, horse racing enthusiast and Red Wings hockey fan. He is survived by Anna Burnett, his loving companion of 47 years; his children, Denny and Christine Wolfe of Quaker Street, William and Barbara Wolfe of Phoenix, AZ, Doug and Pat Wolfe of Malta and Colleen and Glen Glindmeyer of Rotterdam Junction, and Gail (Harry) King of Maine. Gibby is survived by 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter and Shirley Wolfe of Scotia; and a sister, Ethel Hewitt of Glens Falls. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Helen (Proper) Wolfe; and his siblings, Charlie, Teddy, Bill, Richie, Jean Ostrum, Betty Tiffany, Margaret Roche and Olga Cougar. Family and friends are invited to call at DeMarco Stone Funeral Home Inc., 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the funeral home (DeMarco Stone) at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Grove Cemetery, Quaker Street, NY. What a great man Gibby was! I loved to bowl with him Monday evenings. He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. Even as his eyesight was failing him, Anne was the one person he counted on. Although I have not seen Gibby in recent years, I often wondered how he was doing. May you rest in peace Mr. Wolfe!
