Robert Lucien Daileader passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Saratoga Hospital at the age of 95. He had been living at the Home of the Good Shepherd in
Wilton, NY.
Robert was born on June 14, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Lucien George Daileader and Margaret Kelly Daileader. He lived his childhood years in Queens County, NY and eventually moved with his family to Bellerose Village in Nassau County, NY. As he grew older, he commuted from there by bus and train back to Brooklyn, to St. John's Preparatory School, and after graduation continued making treks via train and subway to attend Brooklyn Polytechnic, studying Chemical Engineering. Robert continued his education further afield, with an assistantship at Northwestern University in
Evanston, Illinois. He graduated with his Masters in Chemical Engineering, but not before making the acquaintance of the lovely and vivacious Marion Pertel. She lived in South Chicago, but Robert was undeterred by the trolley and two train rides it took to reach her, some nights taking two and a half hours each way. His dedication paid off with a wedding in August of 1953 shortly after graduation.
Robert continued to be a rolling stone. He and Marion moved to Elizabeth, NJ where he began working for Esso Engineering. It wasn't long before he was drafted into the army and saw six postings in four states in two years. In the meantime, Robert and Marion brought their son Robert and daughter Linda into the world. Once back in civilian life at Esso in New Jersey again, third child Richard was added to the crew.
Professionally, Robert was ready for a new challenge and signed on with General Electric in their Silicones division, necessitating another move to
Niskayuna, NY where child number four, Thomas, joined the brood. Months later, GE tapped him to move to Connecticut and the family set up house in the charming enclave of Newtown, CT where the final three children, twins Mary and Mark, and the youngest, John completed the tribe.
Robert's move to GE was very rewarding, and he moved up through the company with citations for increasing sales and expanding markets. GE decided to they needed him in an area with underutilized potential, and so the Daileader clan relocated one last time to the area of upstate New York. Robert was based in
Waterford, NY and the family moved into a house in nearby Clifton Park. Robert and Marion finished raising their brood there and remained until their retirement. They eventually down-sized to join the Coburg Village coterie in Rexford where they spent many happy years of well-earned relaxation. Eventually they relocated north to Saratoga Springs to be closer to the comfort and care of family.
Amid travel for work and the bustle of a family of seven children, Robert still found time to enjoy many hands-on hobbies. He loved to build and finish furniture, to raise tropical fish, to pursue photography and to craft wooden model ships, leaving behind over two dozen historical replicas with his children and grandchildren. He also would spend hours fishing whenever he got the chance.
All his life, Robert loved the eastern end of Long Island, where he traveled from a young age with his own parents to Sag Harbor, summered with his wife and children on Shelter Island, and cherished the late summer sunsets over West Neck Bay.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife Marion and his two brothers, William and Phillip, and by his daughter-in-law, Trudy Frantz Daileader, late wife of his son Thomas. Survivors include Robert and his wife Dale of McLean, VA; Linda Swenson of
Stamford, CT; Richard and his wife Laura Lawton of Cedar Mountain, NC; Thomas of Newport, RI; Mary Greenier and her husband Ernie of
Gansevoort, NY; Mark and his wife Susan of Scituate, MA; John and his wife Mimi of Shelter Island, NY. He also leaves behind 23 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on October 6, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clements Church in Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866.
Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. following the Mass at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
