Sarah H. Mitchell

Sarah H. Mitchell, 87, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away March 16, 2016. She was born February 24, 1929, in Schenectady, NY, to Daniel M. Behan and Sarah H. Mageean. Sarah was married to Joseph Mitchell on June 12, 2004. He survives, along with their daughters, Pamela (Leon) Hluchota, Elkhart, Patricia West, Cincinnati, OH, Mary Beth (Timothy) Gangwer, Round Rock, TX; and son, Brian (Traci) Cook, Granger; step-daughters, Joyce Roberts, Fresno, CA, Debra (Thomas) DeShone, South Bend, Denise (Harry) Hruska, Hebron, IN; and step-sons, Joseph W. Mitchell, Elkhart, David (Marcy) Mitchell, South Bend; and her brother, Daniel (Janet) Behan, Bolton Landing, NY; as well as 25 precious grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, and her much loved nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, John O. Cook; son, John O. Cook, III; sisters, Margaret (Robert) Campchero, Frances (Donald) Moffett; and granddaughter, Julie Hluchota. Sarah retired as an administrative assistant at Bayer Corporation. She volunteered at Sister Virginia's Adult Education Center and mentored at St. Vincent's School, Pinewood School and Concord West Side School. She and Joe delivered Meals on Wheels for Elkhart General Hospital. Most important to Sarah were her faith and family. She wanted to be remembered as kind and cheerful and wished for her loved ones to find the same happiness that she enjoyed. A Requiem Mass will be held on Monday, March 21, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 N. Main Street, Elkhart. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m., prior to the Mass, and are invited to attend a Celebration of Sarah's Life at the Crystal Ballroom, following the Mass. Memorial donations can be made to Church Community Services of Elkhart or Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA.
