Dr. Stephen Strader

Dr. Stephen E. Strader Ballston Spa - Dr. Stephen E. Strader, 74, passed away with his loving children by his side on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. He was born in Glens Falls, NY on March 7, 1950, to the late Earl R. and Mary L. (Hoague) Strader.
He was a graduate of Glens Falls High School, Union College (cum laude), and the School of Medicine at State University at Buffalo. He married his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Rebecca J. (Wood) Strader, on June 2, 1973, and after he graduated from medical school they settled in Ballston Spa, where they raised their wonderful family.
Dr. Strader completed his residency at St. Clare's and Saratoga Hospitals, before opening a family practice in Ballston Spa in 1981, where he cared for community members until his 2021 retirement. Over the years, Dr. Strader served on staff at Saratoga Hospital; as Medical Director of Maplewood Manor Nursing Home, Saratoga County Infirmary, and Saratoga County Correctional Facility; and as a member of CapitalCare's Managed Care Committee. He was a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York, the Saratoga County Medical Society, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American and NYS Medical Directors Associations. He served on the Ballston Spa National Bank Board of Directors from 1998-2024; during his tenure he served on Compensation (past Chair), Examining, Executive, Governance, and Technology committees.
From a young age, Dr. Strader was fascinated with science and astronomy, which he shared with family and friends as recently as the April 8 solar eclipse. His family always looked forward to stargazing with him. He was known and loved for his quick wit and sense of humor, the twinkle in his eye, his kindness and compassion for others, and his endless support for his family. He enjoyed spending time at Lake George, golfing with his friends, comedy, listening to and playing classic rock, and photography--he was always capturing treasured moments on film.
He was predeceased by his wife Rebecca, his parents, and his brother David Strader.
Dr. Strader is survived by his children Emily Schmidt (Mathew), Rachel Strader Chen (Matthew), and Jeffrey Strader (fiancée Missy Baker); grandchildren Marshall and Cadee Schmidt; siblings Scott Strader (Elizabeth), Deborah Mazza (Jimmy), and sister-in-law Colleen Strader; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Sunday, May 5 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. The funeral service will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Strader may be made to Saratoga Hospital Foundation.
