DONALD LEE HENRY

Donald Lee Henry, 96, longtime Glen Ellyn resident, recently of Wyndemere in Wheaton. Don was an avid hunter, tennis player and high school football referee. Born in Carbondale, IL, to Eunice Ramona Henry (nee Evans) and Hester Wiley Henry; brother to Jay Henry (Brenda), the late Martin Henry (Marilyn), the late Robert Henry (Beverly), the late Keith Henry. His stepmother, Florence Henry, was an important part of his life in later years. Don joined the Navy at 16 (fibbing about his age) and was on the USS Callaghan, the last destroyer sunk by a kamikaze bi-plane at the end of WWII. He was an educator and a longtime principal in Glen Ellyn schools. Don was a loving husband to Karen Henry; a devoted father to Marc Henry, Brett Henry (Phil Trzynka), Viki Renfro (Rob), Melissa Smith (John), and the late Jeff Vincent. He was an adoring grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle of many. He was a gregarious man who never met a stranger and loved a good joke. If asked how he was doing, he would always reply "I couldn't kick if I was dead!" He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by many. A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, March 19, from 2-6 p.m. with a Service at 6 p.m. at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn.
