GEORGE PATTERSON Obituary

George William Patterson of Waukegan The funeral service for George William Patterson will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1400 O'Plaine Road, Libertyville. Father Cosmas Halekakis will officiate. Interment will be in Northshore Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Peterson & Patch Funeral Home, 408 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan. Trisagion will take place at 7 p.m. Born March 19, 1923, in Gargaliani, Greece, the youngest son of William and Helen Patterson, he passed away suddenly Monday morning, Nov. 29, 2010. George, beloved owner and operator of Louie's Restaurant in Waukegan, moved to the United States at the age of 14 and learned English while attending Waukegan schools. He had a determined, strong work ethic and studied at Northwestern University. He proudly served during the Korean War, then came back to Waukegan and earned an accounting degree at Lake Forest College. He worked at Blumberg Furniture in accounts and with David Rose as a CPA. He married his wonderful wife, Theofane (nee Couvall) 52 years ago this December. They raised two sons, Billy (Denise) and Tony. George taught his boys to run the business with a simple involved customer friendly philosophy. George liked to see his many returning customers. He loved his many sisters and brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and former daughter-in-law, Tammy. A huge source of pride and biggest hobby of George was his five grandchildren, George W., Christe, Thea, George A. and David. He was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. George will be forever remembered for the love he had for his home and family, his wit and jokes, and infectious smile and business savvy. He was preceded in death by his twin older siblings, Peter and Katherine.

My prayers are with all of you. I worked for George while he was at Blumberg's and kept in touch through the years at Louie's. He met my mother at the restaurant and never failed to ask about her health. When she passed, the first words he said to me were "I'm so sorry to hear". George was the kindest person I've ever known. The world was a better place with him in it. He will be missed.

December 6, 2010

My deepest condolences to the family. I grew up on Palmer Place (the opposite end of the block from Louie's). Though I moved out of state when I was 15, I still made a trip home to Louie's at least once a year when I would visit family. We had made family celebrations at Louie's over my 41 years and I remember seeing and meeting Mr. Patterson and his sons countless times. Louie's has been part of my family from the beginning. I'm sorry for your loss. I wish continued success to the family and the business.

I grew up with Louie's. My Grandmother frequented the fine establishment and would always bring me home my favorite garlic breadsticks, which then became our daughter's absolute favorites! Our family lived in the neighborhood so there were many pizzas enjoyed from Louie's also! When I began dating my husband I learned that he knew the Patterson family through his best friend. What a small world---George always made our world a little more inviting and joyful as he was there at that front door to greet us every time we dined at Louie's...one of special date places for Poor Man's Lobster! I actually hadn't been in to Louie's for dinner in a couple years, and am grateful that I just visited a couple weeks ago with a friend and had the honor of talking with George for a bit. We will truly miss George and our thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of sorrow. George was a genuine soul!

We will miss George. He was always there at Louie's to say hi and ask you how you are doing. He told me a story one time about how one of his sons wanted to replace the iconic stainless steel cash register with a computerized system. George said he told him, "first you learn how to make the soup, then we will worry about that." That was George, very down to earth.

December 1, 2010
