JAMES SHIRMER Obituary

ROLLING MEADOWS - James "Jim" Shirmer, 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022. Jim was born in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania, on February 10, 1936, to the late William and Gladys Shirmer, and was one of five brothers. He grew up in Mt Carmel, and after high school, he served in the United States Air Force. After his service he moved to the Chicago area, where he met his wife, Donalda. He and Donnie married and settled in Rolling Meadows in 1959. Jim worked hard his whole life to provide for his family, working as a delivery man and eventually owning his own TV repair business. He was actively involved in the community. If you have lived in Rolling Meadows for a number of years, he may have fixed your TV or your intercom at some point, or perhaps umpired a youth baseball game that you played in, or maybe nailed you with a squirt gun at the 4th of July parade. He was a faithful member and volunteer at Saint Colette's Parish and school. He was the king of pool volleyball, was famous in the senior softball league as first a player and then a manager, and was definitely the life of the party. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Donalda Shirmer (MacLean), his five children, Colette (Robert) Sutton, Donna (Jay) Bigelow, James Shirmer, Christopher (Kim) Shirmer, Joseph (Kathryn) Shirmer, his 14 grandchildren, and his 14 great grandchildren. His family, including many nieces and nephews, his neighbors, and his friends, will greatly miss him. His family would like to send a special thanks to the nurses and caregivers at Sunrise of Schaumburg, who cared so lovingly for Jim in his final days. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 3, from 4-7pm at the Meadows Funeral Home, and a funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 4, at 10am at St. Colette's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to St. Colette's Parish. Information 847-253-0224 or Meadowsfh.com.

Jim was very fun and a great next-door neigbor. I loved that guy! Hope to make Heaven my new home and be neighbors with Jim and Donnie again. Of course, Donnie and I are still on Earth, but we'll get there.

Jim and Donalda had been excellent friends even after I moved to Tucson. I remember with fondness a trip to Stanley Lake, UP. I'm grateful for this opportunity to pay tribute to Jim and his family! --Bob Heslinga
