JOHN STETTNER Obituary

John J. "Chuck" Stettner of Elgin Funeral services for John J. "Chuck" Stettner, 87, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 38W040 W. Highland Ave., Elgin, with the Rev. David Newhouse officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at Lily Lake Cemetery. Born April 21, 1923, Ft. Scott, Kan., the son of Otto and Lydia Reber Stettner, he passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at the Apostolic Christian Resthaven Nursing Home. Chuck had been a resident of Elgin for most of his life and was a graduate Elgin High School. He was the owner of Stettner Floor Covering before retiring. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After returning to Elgin he played semi-pro and American Legion Baseball. He was an active member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Elgin, where he was a trustee and Friday morning cook. He donated many hours, flooring and carpeting at both the old and new church. He was a baseball coach in the American Little League and was a Cub Scout leader. He was involved with PADS, Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and the Soup Kitchen. Surviving are his wife, Dorothea Colclough Stettner, whom he married Oct. 14, 1952; sons, Mark (Mary) Stettner of Atlanta, Ga., and James (Marianne) Stettner of St. Charles; grandchildren, John, Hannah, Amanda, Matthew and William; sisters, Marilyn (Gordon) Bryant of Venice, Fla., and Joanne Pease of Horseshoe Bend, Ark.; brother, Donald Stettner of Elgin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Epworth United Methodist Church or Apostolic Christian Resthaven Nursing Home, Elgin.
