Dear Diane, Stephanie and Carl:
I was shocked to learn of Steve's passing. I have many fond memories of Steve playing the tuba in the C-G marching band and driving the fire truck in many of our parades. He always had a knack for making people laugh. His Donald Duck impression will live on vividly in my memory. Stephanie and Carl are fortunate to have had Steve in their lives, as well as you, Diane. It has been a pleasure watching Stephanie grow into such a nice young lady. I'm sure over time we will cross paths once again, until then, please know that your entire family is in all of our hearts and prayers. Please also give my best to Leslie. I tried to attend Steve's visitation, however, recently had back surgery and found that I just couldn't stand for such a long time. I did see the procession of firefighters from the fire station. Steve would have been proud!
Yours in friendship,
Chris (Gee) Davis

Mark and I want to express how sorry we are for your loss. No words will ever bring the comfort, although sometimes they will help ease the pain a bit. Please know the prayers and thought of our family are with your family and will be forever. Also know the Fire Departments from around the area are with you and will be here for you and your family.
Please take care, and take strength in knowing how many are behind you.
Our love and prayers,
Mark and Jennifer Mueller

Dear Diane,
I was so shocked and saddened to read the email sent to me by Judy about Steve. Diane, please accept my heartfelt condolences, be strong for yourself, Stephanie and Carl. Always remember the fond memories you had with Steve and pray to God that you may have the strength to go on with your life for the sake of your children. I hope these excerp from a poem will give you comfort to know that Steve is:
Safely Home
I am home in Heaven, dear ones
Oh, so happy and so bright
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light
All the pain and grief is over
Every restless tossing passed
I am now at peace forever
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Anne, what a shock when I read last week's paper. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this most difficult time. I know all of Cary are wearing their hearts at half-mast. May you find comfort in your memories and may you also find peace from the knowledge of God's love.

I was very shocked and sad to hear of the sudden death of Steve. I first met Steve and the rest of his family when I worked with Air One Equipment. When I answered the phones and Donald Duck was on the other end, it always made me laugh. We have lost a very good person and friend, he will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all the people that knew him.

Dear Diane and Family,
I've had the pleasure of working on shift with Steve for most of his career in Hoffman Estates. He taught me many things, but more importantly, he made me laugh. Needless to say he will be sorely missed.
You are in our prayers;

Diane,
I have been very saddened to hear of your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers in this most difficult time. The loss of a loved one is never easy, but the sudden loss of a loved one, has to be the most difficult pain to endure. I can offer no words of comfort in such a time, except that perhaps yours and Stephanie's and Carl's memories of their father and his love for all of you, will last you a lifetime and give you the strength to deal with this incredibly painful loss.
Sincerely,
Cindy Vaitonis

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Steve's accident last Thursday.
I worked with Steve for a number of years at HEFD Station 3 ande grew to like him a lot, he will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to all of Steve's family members, to the Cary Fire Department, the Hoffman Estates Fire Department, and to the citizens of both towns. Captain Steve Macko was in my mind a firefighters firefighter. All those who knew Steve have been touched by him in many good ways.
Again, I am so very sorry for Steve's untimely death.

I have known Steve Macko and his family for close to 20 years. During this time I have always known him to be a caring and loving father. Despite the worries and dangers of his job and life in general, he always presented a happy face and shared his positive, uplifting attitude with whoever he encountered. No matter what kind of day Steve had to deal with, he could always be counted on to be a pleasure to talk with.
As his next door neighbor, I must admit that he displayed absolute tolerance toward me and some of the derelict cars that I've had parked adjacent to his property over the years. I'm sure he would have preferred that they were not there, but he never said a bad thing to me about them no matter how long they sat there. He offered his advice freely concerning my home remodeling plans, taking the time out of his busy day to help me measure and trying to help me envision what my house could look like when it was completed.
He had a gift for making people, all people, feel important and loved. He leaves behind a loving wife and two bright and disciplined children that most likely will carry on his legacy. They are living testimony to the type of person that Steve was.
I always knew I had a good neighbor in Steve, as good as one could have. My family and I will miss him dearly.
