Ann Barkley Obituary

Ann Stevens Barkley, age 92, of Hernando, Mississippi, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of faith, strength, and boundless love for her family.

Ann was born in Ripley, Mississippi, to the late John Edgar and Idabelle Alsup Stevens. She was also preceded in death by her beloved siblings, Maxine Hall and Billy Stevens; her devoted husband, James M. Barkley; and her precious daughters, Pam Burgess (Hugh) and Kim Fesmire (Dewayne).

A proud graduate of Ripley High School, Class of 1952, Ann's vibrant personality was evident from an early age. She was crowned Homecoming Queen both her junior and senior years - a reflection of her grace, charm, and the way she lit up every room. A talented athlete, she earned a basketball scholarship to Northeast Mississippi Community College, where her determination and competitive spirit continued to shine.

Ann carried that same fierce determination into every chapter of her life. While living in California, she achieved the extraordinary accomplishment of finishing first in her class at the Los Angeles Police Department. After returning home to Mississippi, she continued to excel professionally, eventually rising to Director of Human Resources at Formby's and later after retirement, working for the IRS. Whatever role she stepped into, Ann gave it her whole heart and unwavering effort.

Her greatest strength, however, was her faith. Ann was a devoted and faithful Christian who lived her life serving her personal Savior, Jesus Christ. Her faith guided her decisions, sustained her through life's trials, and shaped the way she loved and served others.

Of all the roles she held, "Nanny" was among her most treasured. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life, and she delighted in every moment spent with them. Ann loved life and truly believed there was nothing she could not do. Whether working in her career, tending her garden, playing pinochle, cooking meals that brought her family together, or simply spending time with her children and grandchildren, she did it all with passion and excellence.

She leaves behind her loving son, Clay (Stacy). She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Emily Carlew (Kevin), Olivia Potts (Wayne), Will Burgess (Amy), David Burgess (Hannah), Jesse Burgess (Laura), Luke Fesmire, JB Fesmire (Jamie), Casey Fesmire, Alaura Barkley (Mark), Lacey Brown (Andrew), Callie Barkley, Chloe Rojas (Hernando), and Nick Barkley along with many adored great-grandchildren who were blessed to know her love and strength.

Ann was blessed beyond measure with a large and devoted family, and it was her life's mission to do everything she could for them. Her legacy is one of resilience, generosity, faith, and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed, forever treasured, and joyfully remembered by all who knew her.

A service to honor Ann, who was loved by so many, will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM at Brantley Funeral Home, 6875 Cockrum St. Olive Branch, MS 38654. Burial will follow at Lebanon Cemetery in Olive Branch, MS.
