Foy B. Mitchell Jr. died July 25, 2023, at the age of 72 after a long goodbye with Lewy Body Dementia. He was predeceased by his parents, Foy and Frances Mitchell of Knoxville. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Brenda; his children, Erin Schmitz, Isaac Mitchell and Sara Henegar, and their spouses, Karsten, Audrey and Michael; his four grandchildren, Bill, Annika, Klara and Eleanor; and his sister, Ann Horton, and brother, Ike Mitchell, and their spouses and children. Foy graduated from UT Health Science Center in 1976 and then served in the USAF as Chief of the ENT Department and Flight Surgeon at Ehrling Bergquist Hospital at SAC Headquarters in Bellevue, Neb., from 1982-1985. He was an otolaryngologist in Athens from 1985 to 2016 and also had an office in Knoxville. Foy loved his family, the outdoors and many hobbies. Some of his passions included hiking, sailing, kite flying, wood working, metal working, and dabbling with interesting instruments like dulcimers and concertinas. He passed on a love of music to all his children and grandchildren. His body was donated to Anatomic Lab at UT Health Science Center in Memphis, where he attended medical school and residency. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, located at 123 S. Jackson Street in Athens.
