Mary Kathryn Wetterstroem Corey McGinnis died on Dec. 13, 2023, at Life Center of Jacksonville, Fla., after a long struggle with cancer. Mary was born on June 18, 1948, in West Palm Beach, Fla., to Alice (Rock) Wetterstroem and Albert F. Wetterstroem. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and elder brother, Albert "Mike" Wetterstroem. She graduated from Forest Hill High School with the class of 1966 and was a proud member of the marching band on clarinet. In the hopes of seeing her first-ever snowfall, Mary matriculated to Tennessee Wesleyan College, majoring in elementary education. While there, she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority and participated in Greek events, winning the master archer competition. Mary began her teaching career at E.K. Baker School and later taught second grade at Ingleside School, where she was especially effective with students facing learning challenges. Mary earned her master's degree in education from Tusculum University in 1991 and retired from the classroom in 2010. Along with her husband of over 30 years, Mike McGinnis, Mary enjoyed traveling throughout Ireland and listening to live music at Irish pubs both near and far. Mary also spent time researching her genealogy, reading historical fiction, and tending to her extensive flower and vegetable gardens. After Mike's death in 2016, Mary relocated to Jacksonville to be near her youngest daughter, Dyan, and her family. Mary is survived by her daughters, Dee Dee (Matt) Wasmund of Seoul, South Korea, and Dyan (Chris) Timmerman; and her adored granddaughters, Lily, Hannah, Olivia, and Heather. Mary's life will be celebrated with a memorial service at her home congregation of Bethlehem Lutheran in Jacksonville during the summer and will then be interred near her parents in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in West Palm Beach. Naugle Funeral & Cremation Services of Jacksonville, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
