Barry advised me several years ago regarding a patent I was seeking, and his knowledge and guidance has proven invaluable. I found the NASA notice when looking him up regarding a new project. I can't thank him enough for the input he gave me.
My sincere condolences to his wife and family

Dear Gibbens family,
I just read the notice in the U.Va. magazine and was shocked and deeply saddened. I first met Barry thirty years ago on my first day at Virginia as I walked into Dunglison dormitory. That was my lucky day because Barry proved a great friend at school as he could always offer a calming smile and attitude in the face of the infamous engineering student workload. We talked of Leon Redbone, Pink Floyd and the Ohio swimming scene and always succeeded in putting the week's problem set in perspective.
I last saw Barry ten years ago when he was contemplating law school - yet another challenge that would have left others weak in the knees. He and Janice were in D.C. and I was lucky enough to join them and several old classmates for dinner at the Old Ebbitt Grill. Barry's college contentment was still intact and that dinner's pleasant memory will stay with me forever.

Dear Gibbens family, I an very truly sorry for passing of Barry. I went to school with Barry and His mom was one of my teachers. We swam together and hung out. My home seem to be the place my friends all hung when we were in high school and college. People even hung there when I was away. My mom and dad treated all my friends like their very own. I remember one night when i was away at school I received a phone call from my mom informing me Barry and his brother Dirk when involved in an auto accident, they hit a house..lol no one was hurt but they called my mom and dad. Dad picked them up, took them home after making sure they were both okay then support them with informing their mom and dad. I have not seen or heard from Barry since college however, after reading the guesr book Barry stayed the same, a very true friend to everyone who crossed his path. He truly will be missed. Warmest regards and God Bless

Dear Gibbens Family:
It was with a heavy heart that I read the notice in this month's Virginia Lawyer that Barry had passed away. Though I had not spoken to Barry since the day we graduated from law school, I often think back fondly on our days studying together in the law library at U of R. I am lucky to be able say that I counted Barry as a friend. Barry was a gentleman of the first order and touched every person he met with his friendship and kindness. God bless your family.

Janice,
I just heard about your loss. I was Barry's secretary at NASA from 1988 until 1993 or beyond. My heart is sickened, for I feel that I basically raised Barry as well as his other co-workers during our time in the Model Engineering Section of AEB. He will be missed more than I can put into words. Barry was loved by all of us but GOD loves him best. If there is ever anything that I can do for you or your family, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Dear Jan,
Our hearts are broken. We are so sorry to hear about your loss. Please know that you, Bradley and Amy are in our thoughts and prayers. Dennis and I were remembering you and Barry and the time that you purchased tickets for us to attend the Valentine's Day dinner at Northside and the kindness that you showed to us during a difficult time in our lives. We feel certain there were many times that you and Barry went above and beyond to help others in need. God is surely saying, "Barry, job well done good and faithful servant." We pray that you are able to feel the loving arms of our Father God around you during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathy for the Gibbens family. Barry was a truly friendly and warm person who I've came in contact with, on nearly a daily basis, at the fitness center. His presence will be greatly missed.

Barry was always there with some dry humour and a laugh. He was in the fitness center a lot, and was one of the few guys who could bench press more than I could :) We corresponded often on legal matters, and I commented he was "starting to sound like a lawyer" and he laughed and said he had noticed that himself. I'll always remember the way he treated my questions with interest and professionalism.
