Charles Haramis Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Charles Eugene (Chuck) Haramis, age 73, passed away on March 17, 2016. Chuck graduated from Watkins Glen, NY Central High School in 1960 and the Fort Schuyler Maritime College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering. After graduation, Chuck went to work for America Export-Isbrandtsen Lines and was licensed by the US Coast Guard as a Third Assistant Engineer. In 1968, Chuck was accepted at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in West Milton, NY and studied to become an Engineering Officer of the Watch for the land based nuclear submarine prototype used for training Navy nuclear operators. Longing to be at sea, Chuck returned to the America Export-Isbrandtsen Lines before finally making his way to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in 1973. Chuck was hired into the Operating Ships Nuclear Design Project, Atomic Power Division. Chuck's marine engineering and nuclear operations training suited his position as a mechanical engineer specializing in fluid system design. He retired as a Master Shipbuilder from Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) in 2012. Golf was his passion, from working on his father's golf course in his early years to becoming a 40 year member of the Kingsmill Golf Club. Chuck was fondly known as "The Greek" to his friends at NNS. Chuck was a people person and always had time to help or encourage others. Co-workers were always happy to just see him each and every day because he always had a smile and a bright outlook no matter what challenges the day may bring. His outgoing personality and sense of humor were contagious. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles G. Haramis and A. Ione Ward, and by his wife, Donna Palmer Haramis. Survivors include his brother, G. Michael Haramis (Nina) of Mitchellville, MD and sister Georgia J. (Matthew) Perry of Mitchellville, MD; nephews Lieutenant Colonel Jason M. Norton of Clarksville, TN, Oliver H. Perry of Linthicum, MD, Christopher B. Perry of Baltimore, MD, Travis B. Haramis of Annapolis, MD and niece Christina F. Haramis of Bowie, MD; and grandnephew Kieran R. Norton of Clarksville, TN, and grandniece Jewel T. Perry of Linthicum, MD., and all of his friends at Kingsmill and in the Nuclear Engineering Division of NNS who will sorely miss him. A memorial service for Charles E. Haramis will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral home is located in Newport News at 11144 Warwick Blvd.

I'm so sorry to hear that Chuck "The Greek" has passed. He was a great person with an "infectious" laugh. He was a huge part of what made Reactor Services a great place to work.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Chuck's family. I am proud to say I knew Chuck and worked with him at Newport News Shipbuilding for about 40 years. I was fortunate enough to attend Saturday's Memorial Service in his honor. I hope his family recognized, based upon the attendance, how much Chuck meant to his E82 Family. I heard the man at the Funeral Home say that they had been told to expect about 20 people, the last count I heard was 67, a good number of those were from E82. I know much of the credit for the turnout must go to Sheryl. I was also proud to say I was a member of the E82 family! Often when you retire you kinda lose touch with those you worked with and assume they have forgotten about you. Based upon the number who attended, that is clearly not the case for the E82 family. I hope that you don't wait until the funeral to reach out to other retirees. As Yogi Berra once said, Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours

I just heard the news of Mr. Haramis's passing. He was my client for many years at the Kingsmill Spa. He always had a smile and lots of conversation. I enjoyed him very much and will miss him so much. He shared many of the pictures he took with me and many of his stories. I can truly say he will be missed at Kingsmill . My prayers and thoughts are with his family who meant so much to him.
