Evelyn Dawson Obituary

Evelyn Mae (Stowell) Dawson, 90, also known as Mom, Granny and Aunt Evie, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2022. Although born in Washington, D.C., she was a very proud lifelong Phoebus resident. Whether being a member of the Phoebus school's PTA, the Pocahontas Club or Phoebus Ladies Auxiliary, Evelyn was always connected to her community.

She was the youngest and last surviving of seven siblings. Evelyn was always a hard worker and supported her two children as a single parent while working in the hospitality industry in Phoebus and Hampton. Raising two successful children, Jack and Jill (deceased), was always her proudest accomplishment, and she was delighted to tell you about them.

When family came into town, you knew you were going to be spending time in Colonial Williamsburg…which became her "happy place." If someone got out car keys she knew she was going to have a fun day going somewhere…anywhere was fine with her. She really enjoyed riding around Phoebus and Hampton reminiscing about places where she and her extended family had lived and the memories they made. Celebrating Christmas meant so much to her that she kept Christmas decorations and pictures out year-round. She loved reading the newspaper, accompanied by pots of coffee, and keeping up with current events and politics which she often discussed with her son and sister, Madeline Sanzo, on their long phone calls.

If you went to her home, you would be walked down the "Hall of Family" and got to see dozens of pictures and hear about the people who made her happiest. Evelyn is survived by her son Jack (Charme), four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. It's hard to imagine what life will be without her….fortunately there are many memories that will make us smile when we think of time spent with her.

One of the sweetest ladies I've ever known. She was the best friend of my Aunt Grace. I am better because I knew her...

Evelyn was my other aunt who was always part of my family .When I younger I thought Jack and Jill were my cousins. I remember my mom would call her 3 or 4 times just to talk about what were they watching on TV . And when they lived next door to each other, they would meet up on each other porch for coffee . God bless her because we were bless to have her .

Jack: We always enjoyed visiting with your mom when she was visiting you. She was so pleasant and was always full of compliments about her children and family. We were blessed with her visits and time we shared together during the Christmas Holidays. May God bless and comfort you and your family with all of the good and memories during the times that seem to be difficult without her. Much love to you all. From Paul and Cassandra.

Evelyn was a life long friend to my family. Her family lived next door to us. She was my sister Grace's best friend. I would try to make sure I saw her every time I came home. I know Grace and Evelyn are laughing and talking in heaven right now. I am so sorry for your loss.
