Rev. L. Douglas Stowe

L. Stowe Obituary

HAMPTON - The Rev. L. Douglas Stowe, 67, Senior Pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Headmaster of Gloria Dei Lutheran School, died on July 31, 2009 in Hampton, Va.
Pastor Stowe grew up in Mt. Holly, N.C. He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., The Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C., and the Memphis Institute of Medicine and Religion. He was a Diplomate of the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy. Southern Seminary honored him as the Rheinartz Scholar for the coming academic year.
Gloria Dei was Pastor Stowe's chosen family. Through his dedication and leadership, the church grew from a fledgling congregation to nearly one thousand members since his call to serve in 1969. He established Gloria Dei Lutheran School, which became one of the five largest parochial schools in the Lutheran Church of America within 10 years. His gift for teaching children "THE STORY" in school chapel changed the lives of thousands of children and adults. His preaching and his pastoral care made clear to everyone his care and concern. Working as what he liked to call a "player-coach," Pastor Stowe established an exceptional child care program, Sunrise House for adult medical daycare, and Gloria Dei Academy, a parish-based Clinical Pastoral Educational program accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. His plan for "The Cloisters at Royal Reserve," a senior housing project, is currently under development. Pastor Stowe was a visionary, who faithfully responded to the Holy Spirit to shepherd his flock and build a priesthood of believers. "Well done good and faithful servant!" Matthew 25:21.
Hampton was Pastor Stowe's chosen home. Serving Hampton and the Peninsula as Contact Pastor to Langley Air Force Base; chaplain and Crisis Intervention Counsel for the Hampton Police Department; visiting lecturer to Tidewater Regional Academy for Criminal Justice; sponsoring Pastor of the largest Girl Scout and Boy Scout Programs on the Peninsula; charter organizer of Hampton Ecumenical Lodging and Provisions; Dean of Peninsula Area of the Virginia Synod Lutheran Church of America; and as an Advisor to Riverside Hospital Department of Mental Health, he carried out his commitment to his community "with heart." The fellowship of the Men's Bible Study on Tuesday mornings was often the renewing high point of his week. He loved the Bay and enjoyed sailing its waters on the 'Willing Spirit,' his beloved appropriately named sailboat.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawson and Helen Stowe; by Sally Osborne Stowe, his wife and principal of Gloria Dei Lutheran School from 1980 until her death in 1991.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Ann Hough; his stepchildren, Regina, Amy, and Bryant Etheridge; his grandchildren, Madeleine, Rowan, and Kendall Grace Etheridge; his sister, Mary Louise Stowe; his brother, Thomas Rhyne Stowe; and his nephews, William Rhyne Stowe and Thomas Bradley Stowe.
Pastor Stowe had expressed his hope that contributions in his memory would be made to the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, in lieu of flowers.
Visitation at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 250 Fox Hill Road, Hampton, Va., will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today, Aug. 3. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, with a reception following the worship service. Burial will be at a later date.

I am still saddened, to this day, by the loss of such a great man. I haven't been able to bring myself to sign the guest book sooner...I still cry when I think about what a great man he was and how much he'll be missed. My whole life at Glorie Dei was under his wings from Kindergarten to confirmation to first communion to graduation and beyond. Whenever I came home to visit, he always made me feel like I had never left. I am sad that I will never again get a great big Pastor Stowe hug, but am happy he got to meet my son when we were there over the summer. Pastor always had such great words for us "kids" and I will always keep them close.
In the words of Pastor Stowe, "God bless you as you continue to grow in His tender love and in His care"

I only learned of Doug's death today. He took a great risk and gave me my first ministry position after graduation from Lutheran Southern Seminary. He entrusted me with the leadership of Sunrise House Adult Day Care during the difficult process of rebuilding that ministry from 2000-2002. He was a wonderful and loving man whose passion for ministry was exceeded only by his love for humanity. My love and prayerful thoughts go out to Doug and to Joy. You all meant so much to me and my family.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Pastor Stowe. He was a dear man and a true "warrior" for spreading God's word. He performed my first marriage, and was the first person to meet and christen my oldest daughter, Jessica. I know he is "home" and preparing to meet us again. Our family is deeply saddened to hear that Pastor Stowe has passed away. Our children attended the school at Gloria Dei for several years and had such a wonderful time there, largely in part to due Pastor Stowe and his committment to their education and experience. He was such a warm, caring man that truly cared about children. His family, as well as the entire Gloria Dei family, are in our hearts and prayers.

My heart goes out to Joy and the Gloria Dei family. Pastor Stowe will forever be in my heart as a huge part of my childhood. He was instrumental in creating the family that is Gloria Dei, and growing up there was a wonderful experience. Pastor Stowe always had a hug and smile for us children, and the passion he had for Christ and the church was evident every day. He will be deeply missed, but forever remembered.

A true shepherd that laid down his life for his sheep. Many times he was there to guide and comfort through the Word of the Lord while I lived in Hampton. My memories of him will always remain etched in my mind. I know that some day I will see him once again that will be forever more.

My daugter-in-law in Charlotte, NC just notified me of the Reverend Stowe's death, and many lasting memories surfaced.
I met Doug at a Homecoming dance at Lenoir Ryhne, which made a lasting impression on me. Many years later I walked into the office of the Gloria Dei pre-school to enroll my second son and to my delight I was to renew my earlier impression.
Our lives continued to cross. My daughter-in-law, originally from Hampton, and a member of Gloria Dei, asked the Reverend Stowe to come to Charlotte, NC and officiate at her wedding to my oldest son. We once again renewed our acquaintance with one another.
I know God directs our paths to renew and remember; and I am thankful to God for all the opportunities He provides. I am thankful for the life of Doug Stowe, and pray that the family is smiling with me at his memory.

One of the things a good friend of Pastor Stowe used to say is that “He was not always right, but never in doubt!” When I heard of Pastor Stowe’s death, that phrase ran through my head. Whatever he did he did with faith and passion. But he knew he was “cracked” like the rest of us and taught me that when you take a wrong direction… learn from it and boldly get back on track. When we joined Gloria Dei in 1980 I had been away from the church for nearly 15 years. The week after we joined Gloria Dei, Pastor invited me to one of his famous lunches. He asked me to accept a leadership position in the church. I asked him “are you really looking for someone that has been un-churched for so long, not sure where his spirit was, and generally unfamiliar with church leadership.” His response was … “I knew you would say yes!”

That began the rewarding and spiritually fulfilling journey with him and Gloria Dei. I worked with him on the design and building of the Nave… the most rewarding experience I have ever had. As Pastor Freeborn noted… he inspected every stone and met every worker. He inspired them to “build a church” not just put up a building. His passion for excellence was the beacon we followed. I remember he showed up at my house one evening after dinner … unannounced… and said “come on we are going to Williamsburg to look at a floor in the Marriott, I think it will work for the Nave.” So… road trip… and that is the floor we have.

Pastor taught us that we have the mark of Jesus on our hearts, put there by the Holy Spirit. If you accept that we know the Christ through other people … I know that mark upon my heart is there in no small part because of knowing Pastor Stowe. “He was not always right, but never in doubt.” Pastor Stowe was never in doubt about his faith. I have no doubt that once our grief over his death passes, we will realize that Christ has given us what we need for this time. Joy and the whole Stowe family, we are with you in this time of grief. I found the following passage comforting and offer it to you.

25 I have told you these things while I am still with you. 26 But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you. 27 I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn't like the peace that this world can give. So don't be worried or afraid.

28 You have already heard me say that I am going and that I will also come back to you. If you really love me, you should be glad that I am going back to the Father, because he is greater than I am.

~ John 14:25-28

Pastor Stowe was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He helped me become who I am today, by teaching me God's word. I graduated from Gloria Dei in 2007 and saw him back in June at my cousin Morgan's graduation. He remembered me like I had never left. He was such a loving person. My deepest sympathy is extended to his family. He will be missed.

Pastor Stowe was a great man who taught me so much in life. I can't remember a time when he wasn't there. He baptized, confirmed and married me. My condolences to you all. God Bless

Joy & Family

I extend my deepest sympathy and prayers of comfort to you and your family.

There is a definite sadness in many hearts over the loss of our Dear Pastor and Friend. From the time he came to my house to discuss the baptizing of Jason and Andrea. I knew that I had found a home with Christ. He was such a blessing to me and my family he baptized my children, celebrated their weddings, and helped us deal with the death of both parents. He always made the happy times more joyful and the sad times easier to handle. I know that even now when I walk through the halls of Gloria Dei I will feel his warm embrace for he will always be with us and watching over us.

Pastor had touched many lives and he accomplished many deeds in Christ name. For that I am sure that in heaven a banquet is held celebrating his life as we know it and his new life with Christ is just the beginning.

Indeed...an amazing man. Pastor has been in my life since I was 4 years old.He taught me about Jesus. He sang with us.He ate with us and jumped rope with us. He gave me my birthday blessings and birthday blessings to my daughter. He hired my mom at his school as a teacher, and then years later hired me. He even married my husband and me. There will never be a day that I don't think of him and his ministry. He touched countless people and left behind an amazing legacy. He was truly a fine example to so many...and he will be missed deeply. I will continue to pray for his family and his church family at this most difficult time. The impact he had on children, their parents and the whole community is priceless. His presence will be missed, but he did teach us that we will all be together again one day.I will miss him picking on us Baptists in our staff meetings. We all love him dearly, and his family can know that he served a great purpose.

Since I moved to VA ten years ago, Gloria Dei has made lasting impacts on my life.
I graduated 1st through 5th grade in 2004, recieved my first communion and was confirmed all under Pastor Stowe's guidance.

I'll never forget the numerous things Pastor Stowe taught me over the years, one of which was that there is no such thing as a perfect person. "We're all cracked pots," he told me, on many occassions.
As I approach college age, Pastor Stowe will remain in my heart. He showed me that one person can change a life, and that's what I hope to do with mine.

Pastor Stowe was a blessing to everyone he knew and he will be tremendously missed.
I have the fondest memories of him and Gloria Dei school, ones that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

My prayers are with you all.

To the family of Pastor Stowe,
Our children, Maya and T. Michael Boddie,(ages 15 & 12 now) are who they are, in part, because of the wonderful educational ministry of Pastor/Headmaster L. Douglas Stowe. Like thousands of others, they received their academic foundation from Gloria Dei, and one of our fondest memories is their annual "birthday blessings" from Pastor Stowe. We are filled with joy even as we join you in grief and offer our deepest condolences. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of bereavement. May the Holy Spirit bring you strength and comfort as your memories bring you the "Joy of the Lord."

My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family of Pastor Stowe. I attended Gloria Dei Lutheran School for first through fifth grades and am now a sophomore in college. One of my fondest memories at Gloria Dei was attending weekly chapel. I especially loved when my birthday came around, and I received my "birthday blessing." As Pastor Stowe whispered his words of wisdom in my ear, his impact was greatly felt. Gloria Dei set a foundation for my life, and Pastor Stowe was an immense part of that. May he rest in eternal peace. He will be greatly missed.

August 4, 2009

My son Ryan attended Gloria Dei from 1st through 5th grades - and he and our entire family loved Pastor Stowe so much! In June my son graduated from high school, and one of the highlights of that very special time was attending the June 7th evening service when the graduates that had attended Gloria Dei were recognized. As usual, Pastor Stowe remembered us right away - I am so thankful that we had the opportunity to tell him how important he and Gloria Dei LS were in our son's (and family's) life.

Bless you, Pastor Stowe, for the legacy you left behind.

When I was librarian in the Gloria Dei Family (Nancy Stavisky 1984-1991), I was always impressed with Pastor Stowe, not only as a pastor, but also as a "regular guy" who could relate to just about anybody. His sense of humor often kept us all afloat, and his vision for Gloria Dei knew no bounds.

Douglas Stowe was a "happening." He leaves this world a better place because he "happened" to be here. Thank God.

Although Doug is gone from our sight, his influence will be felt by hundreds of people for generations to come. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Joy and Pastor Stowe's family. He was a great pastor and teacher in leading us to follow God and our hearts and had so much positive impact on Gloria Dei. I remember during my years at Gloria Dei School he lead chapel with such deep passion. The thing I loved most about his moving chapel services was during the week of my birthday I would get to go up to the alter and sit on his lap while he whispered something in my ear and then the whole church would sing "Happy Birthday". Every year that I got to sit in his lap and listen to his wonderful words I would have the biggest smile on my face and would never want it to end. My favorite memory of Pastor Stowe was every Sunday after church I would walk out the main doors and there he would be standing shaking everybody's hands and giving out hugs to anybody who needed one. Whenever I finally made it through the line and it was my turn to get a hug; his arms would wrap around me and give me the feeling of being safe like nothing could ever happen to me and I miss that dearly. I also miss that whenever I served as part of the Cross and Crown and everybody was singing at the top of their lung's as we walked in, I could always here him sing above everybody. Whenever he started to sing his voice would echo throughout the whole building and when you heard it you just wanted to sing along. Even though Pastor Stowe is in a better place now, he was a great man and always will be. He will forever be missed and will forever be in our hearts and prayers.

With Love,

We have lost an icon in our community. When our beloved son, Stephan passed away, it was Pastor Stowe who listened to greiving parents very patiently and was very comforting when he presided over the funeral. He was overjoyed when our second son, Billy, was born, and baptized him. It was as if he safely sent one son to heaven and returned another , God bless him and his family. JoAnn and Bill Bearden

This is such a difficult loss because Pastor Stowe and Gloria Dei have been such a huge part of my life. I grew up at Gloria Dei with Pastor Stowe and even when life led me away from Hampton, Virginia, my heart and faith have also stayed there. It will never be the same without Pastor Stowe there every Sunday with a hug and story for everyone. He was always there to watch me grow up over the years, from graduating high school, then college, to falling in love and getting married. He has been with me every step of the way. I will miss him telling me how special I was and recalling "the little girl bouncing around in the front pew in her pigtails". That was always his favorite story about me and he always told it to new people we met along the way. My thoughts and prayers go out to Pastor Stowe's family, including everyone at Gloria Dei. I know we are all deeply affected by this. I love you Pastor Stowe and you will be forever missed!

I remember working at Gloria Dei and how all the children loved Pastor Stowe. You could hear his laugh fill the hallways. He always had time to stop, speak to, and hug all the children.
After we moved away in 2002, we came back to visit a few times and he always remembered our names. But the greatest memoryI have of him is attending his Pastor's class.

My family shares in the grief of the Gloria Dei community and extends our sympathy to Joy and her family, to the Stowe family and to their relatives.

I guess Pastor was about 27 when I first shook his hand. I was only 16 then, but I knew that I could trust this man.

Over the past 40 years, my family has witnessed Pastor Stowe's vision and his faith take root and flourish. I'm most thankful Becky and I had the opportunity to know him and to work with him as he worked so tirelessly to help others.

Peace.

Our deepest condolences to Pastor Stowe's family.

We were in complete and utter shock when we learned of Pastor Stowe's passing. Pastor was a rock...a monumental person whom we all drew strength from in trying times. Anyone who was fortunate enough to cross paths with him was truely blessed and after talking with him, you knew it. Rest in peace Pastor, this "cracked pot" was honored to have known you and honored to have you lead our congregation.

Pastor Stowe's first influence in our lives came, not surprisingly, through a child. While attending Pre-K at Gloria Dei, my then 4-year old son Andy said "Mom, Pastor Stowe says if we don't have a church home we can come here." And we did.

We are so fortunate to have experienced the many blessings of knowing Pastor Stowe. I cherish the time working with him at Gloria Dei and I will never forget his energy, enthusiasm, and zest for life. I thank God for putting him in our lives and I miss him dearly.

Joy and family, you have our deepest sympathy and you remain in our prayers. May God grant you comfort and peace during this time.

During the past few years my family and I have had the privilege of hearing Pastor Stowe speak at many services. He always left us with a smile and a love of Christ. He had a sincere passion for his congregation and the many missions and efforts that they pursued to help the community. He will be deeply missed. Our families condolences, love, and prayers go out to the entire Stowe and Gloria Dei families.

Joy & Family,

These days are very sad days. We are honored to have known Pastor Stowe & so very blessed to have been touched by his joyous spirit. Having him in the most important parts of our lives(confirmation, marriage, baptizing of our son & many others). As he often said "We are all cracked pots trying to do the best we can" those words will live with me forever. So as the Gloria Dei family well knows it is time to put on our boots & march,march,march.."Onward Christian Soliders"..together we march in honor of his memory & our mission for the future of Gloria Dei

The Whited family of Leavenworth County, Kansas are so sadden by the death of Pastor Stowe. We were members from 1973-1981, and still have fond memories of Pastor Stowe and the many friends we made while attending Gloria Dei. After moving from the Hampton area, we always compared other churches to the warm, friendly, and religious experience we encountered at Gloria Dei.

Having known Doug since elementary school, I feel a tremendous loss his sudden passing. I cannot think a classmate that I have ever respected or admired any more than Doug.

Doug exemplified the type of person we all should try to emulate. He has touched many lives and has left many friends.

Pastor Stowe married my husband David and I on June 21, 2003...but before our wedding he met with us a few times...and I learned so much about marriage and walking together as a couple with God in those talks..it made our wedding so meaningful. Later that year we took a class for new members and often "big" questions would be asked...about death, faith, etc. Often Pastor would give detailed explanations to these questions but sometimes his reply was simply "it's a mystery..." (with a huge smile on his face), somehow, coming from him, this response wasn't scary, it was reassuring. Pastor acknowledged as beleivers we will not know all the answers to everything, but one day we will. My daughter talked about him visiting her preschool class and always gave him a big hug on Sunday mornings...My entire family will miss him...and we will be praying for Joy and the rest of his family.

Sincerest sympathies to all the family and Gloria Dei Church. Pastor Stowe greatly influenced my life -- through the school which my daughter attended in the 1980s and by officiating at my father's funeral in 1990. Because of his influence, I am now an active member of St Martin's Lutheran in Austin TX. The church and the community has lost a great and compassionate man.

What would Gloria Dei be without Pastor Stowe? What a kind, warm, loving, caring Paster he was. And what beautiful music he brought to our ears at Gloria Dei. He will be missed so much. My deepest sympathy to Pastor Stowe's family and friends at Glorida Dei.

I have known Doug since he came to Gloria Dei at the beginning of his incredible ministry. The first parsonage was right down the street from my house in Elizabeth Lake Estates. Doug's first wife, Sally, and I became very good friends and my first husband and I socialized with them often. My daughter and I still use Sally's recipe for beef stew. I wasn't even a Lutheran, but enjoyed going to special services at the church. It truly became my "second church". I will be thinking about you and praying for your members. It will be hard without Doug, but he has built a strong church and I know that in God's own way, this will bond the church even tighter.

My Family and I send out Deepest sympathy to Pastor Stowe's family. I went to gloria dei from 3 year old childcare, until i graduated from 5th grade. I remember everythursday the "chapel" time we had. We would give a list of prayer intentions to our teacher, and Pastor Stowe would read EVERY SINGLE ONE off, from all the grades. It was very easy to talk to him, and I will always remember him. I am going into highschool this year, and I will always remember him. You will be missed Pastor Stowe.

Shalom, my friend. I was a student at Gloria Dei, a church member from 1985 - 1994, and the daughter of a Gloria Dei teacher. I always felt proud to call Gloria Dei my school and church. Being a military family we moved in 1994 and it was like leaving our family. By far, it is the hardest move I have ever made in my life. My Mom and I had the opportunity to visit three years ago and spent some time with some of the school and church employees and most importantly we shared some moments with Pastor Stowe. I was able to express my gratitude for him in my life – I have yet to find a pastor that speaks to my heart the way he did. More importantly I got to express my apologies for not always making it easy for him to teach us. You see, we had a very lively group of teenagers. He was so humble about it and just gave me a warm embrace. I still keep in touch with a few of my old Gloria Dei friends and as we have gotten older we have reminisced about the old times and I can attest that Pastor Stowe influenced many of us in a powerful way. We have an open mind that God loves all of us deeply and that we ARE worthy. Thank you for loving us, when we had a hard time loving ourselves.

We’ll see you again…..Shalom.

It is rare that such a human enters our lives; One who is filled with compassion and strength as Pastor Stowe was. He was truly an unbelievable man, so filled with love and a contagious spirit. My family has been a part of Gloria Dei since they opened their doors so many years ago and I can say that the education my sister and I received there goes well beyond what you learn in a textbook. I am so blessed to have had him in my life and I know that he is now at peace and will be watching over all of us. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Dear Stowe and Gloria Dei families,

We are deeply saddened and share your loss. Pastor Stowe closely touched our lives including our sons Ole, Paul, Brian, Patrick and Colin through our marriage, confirmations, baptisms, church, school culminating in my NASA retirement where Doug "seized the opportunity" to witness to those present. The news is like the crashing of a tall timber amongst us, but we can live in our faith that he is now "In Heaven Above".

I remember one day Doug came to our home for a visit. He and Terry and I sat around our kitchen table and talked about being a believer in this world.

Doug looked at us and said, "Do you ever think you are worthy to be working for the Lord? To have all these things He has given us?" The weight of the question kept his eyes lowered and his hands slightly trembling.

It was a question shared by three unlikely people beneath the eyes of God. "I do not know why He ever picked me?"" he said quietly. It would be years later before his question would burn our own hearts so deeply.

That was Doug Stowe. Regardless of the accomplishments and the leadership we all saw from him in the church and the community, he was just a man who could not believe he was worthy to be chosen as one who walked with God. That is the humility we knew.

Not long after, God took us away from Gloria Dei and Doug to learn more about His many believers and the people He wants to reach.

Doug is with God and we live here in China serving the message of the Gospel. An unlikely group of three who are still bound by a moment.

Watch for us,Doug, we have so much to tell you when we see you.

i was a student at Gloria Dei from 1987-1991. i remember Pastor Stowe for his love of life and exhuberance. I remember when they were building the current sanctuary he could often be seen outside overseeing the construction. He was always present around the school and no student who went their will forget him. i know he is in heaven with his first wife who proceded him some years ago and is looking down on all the people he influenced. Rest in Peace Gloria Dei wont be the same.

My deepest sympathy is extended to Pastor Stowe's family, friends, and Gloria Dei.

Pastor Stowe and Gloria Dei were a large part of my childhood education. I attended Gloria Dei for school from 2nd through 6th grades; I believe that I was in the second class to go through the school, which only went through 6th grade at the time. It was a wonderful place to grow up, and its small size and family atmosphere made for a very safe and secure learning environment.

A very special part of my elementary years there was Friday chapel. I remember lining up in the halls to process into the little chapel, waiting for Pastor Stowe to come and lead us all in for the service. As he would walk down the hall, he would often give us a "bop" on the head with his fist -- a loving gesture that we always knew was coming! He would lead all of the classes into the chapel with the organ bellowing "Lift High the Cross." To this day, when I hear that hymn, I think of Pastor Stowe and Friday chapel at Gloria Dei, and it truly warms my heart!

I will always appreciate all that Pastor Stowe did for me and my family, from being a part of our education, offering spiritual guidance, being a friend, and even officiating at my marriage. He leaves a wonderful legacy at Gloria Dei.
