Logan BOSTIAN Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Logan Chappell Bostian, born on Dec. 26, 1922 in Kansas City, Mo., died April 8, 2010, at Chambrel in Williamsburg, Va.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, William Jolliffe Bostian of Salisbury, Md., and Lawrence Byron Chappell Bostian of Williamsburg; and daughter, Andrea Elizabeth Nelson of Nashville, Tenn.
Logan Bostian was an only child who loved the Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He prepared for college at The Webb School of Bell Buckle, Tenn., and then entered Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he excelled in science and mathematics. He was a member of the Princeton University class of 1944 and graduated with High Honors, Phi Beta Kappa in 1943. He immediately joined the Manhattan Project at Princeton, simultaneously working for a Ph.D. He served in the Army for two years while working on the Project. While receiving a master's degree, Logan joined Allied Chemical in 1947, at their then newly formed Central Research Laboratory in Morristown, N.J. He married Julia Jolliffe in 1947, and they had a son, William, in1949. Logan also received his Ph.D. that year. Julia died in June of 1951, of complications prior to childbirth.
Dr. Bostian married Patricia Montenyohl in September 1952, and they had son, Lawrence in 1953 and daughter, Andrea in 1956. Dr. Bostian was the chief contributor to Allied's nylon polymer process and became second in charge of the laboratory. He transferred to the Nitrogen Division in Hopewell, Va., as Director of Research. He retired from Allied Chemical and joined Virginia Chemical in Portsmouth, Va., in 1971. He retired from Virginia Chemical in 1985, and he and Pat moved to Williamsburg in 1988.
Dr. and Mrs. Bostian are members of Bruton Parish Church, where Logan sang in the Pelham choir and was a member of the vestry. Logan and Pat traveled extensively and some of his favorite trips were to East Africa and Turkey. Dr. Bostian served on the Board of the Virginia Opera and the Board of the Williamsburg Symphonia. Both Bostians were active in the Christopher Wren Society, with Logan teaching classes in Wagner's operas. Dr. Bostian was a master gardener, a master bridge player, and he loved golf, belonging to the Spotswood Seniors Golf Association. He even achieved every golfer's dream - a hole in one (more than once!). Dr. Bostian was a respected and beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Most importantly, he was a child of God.
In lieu of Flowers, friends may make donations to the Heritage Humane Society or the Metropolitan Opera.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, at Bruton Parish.

Dear Bostian family--

I never met Dr. Logan Bostian in person but like a great many naturalists I "met" him in Karl Kauffeld's 1957 book on reptile collecting ("Snakes and Snake Hunting," Hanover House). Kauffeld spent several days in southeastern Arizona in 1941 in search of rare reptiles for the Staten Island Zoo,and there he met young Logan Bostian, who was a guest at the Carr Canyon Ranch in the Huachuca Mountains near Fort Huachuca. Kauffeld wrote engagingly about his time with Logan, searching for rare snakes in the canyons and cliffs of the Huachucas, and as a very young person myself when I first read those lines, I so wished I could have had such an opportunity as Logan had. So many others like me who read Kauffeld's book wished likewise--his book was the first to interest great numbers of young people in the natural world and especially in the world of reptiles and amphibians. Kauffeld's writing contributed to my own career choice in biology, and just tonight I pulled down my copy of that book and came yet again across Logan's name. I resolved to look him up and I found that he had passed away less than a month ago. His obituary clearly identified him as the same person Kauffeld met in 1941 (Kauffeld referred to Logan as going on to become a nuclear physicist). Please accept my condolences at Logan Bostian's passing, and I hope that his involvement in the formative years of what became a very influential book will add even more dimension to your memories of what seems to have been a very full and fulfilling life.

Sincerely
