Peter YEVAK Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Peter James Yevak, 63, was taken suddenly from his family and friends and went to our heavenly Father on Nov. 15, 2012.
Petie was born on Feb. 4, 1949, at Elizabeth Buxton Hospital, Newport News.
Petie was the son of the late John Robert Yevak Sr. and Lavinia Stallings Yevak; and younger brother of the late John Robert (Bobby) Yevak.
He attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, Newport News High School and the University of Oklahoma. He was most recently employed by the Newport News City Schools as an Avid tutor. Petie was a musician and artist who played the guitar like no other. He always had a song in his heart and wrote and sang songs about the world and life around him. A free spirit, he had an easy going personality, was a good listener and was easy to talk to. Petie was very active, enjoyed the outdoors, camping, concerts and especially the beach. He loved his family dearly and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone. He will be forever loved and missed. In our hearts he will always "stay forever young."
Petie is survived by sisters, Karen A. Yevak, Shannon Leskin and husband, Will; brother, Tommy Yevak and wife, Kathy; as well as three children, Eric Yevak, Megan Mullis and husband, Thomas, and Earl Yevak. He is also survived by nephews, Edwin Leskin and Jay Yevak; nieces, Michelle Claire, Lauren Yevak, Leanna Yevak; and dear friend, Stephanie Gray. Petie, "Papa," is the proud grandparent of three beautiful grandchildren, Brianna Yevak, Sage Gray, and Liam Mullis.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at The Church of Jesus Christ of The Latter Day Saints, 1510 Todd's Lane, Hampton, VA 23666.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
A viewing will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, followed by a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Arrangements by Smith Brothers Funeral Home, 545 E. Mercury Blvd., Hampton, phone, 757-723-4117. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Pete was a great friend and listener, as well as a fantastic musician to say the least - I will always remember our times at the beach, bbqs, and jam sessions - Steph, Sage and Pete adopted me as one of their own for a summer and I will never be able to convey my gratitude. Love you all and thinking of you

Dear Karen, Shannon & Tommy, I wish I had been there with you for Petie's life celebration. Had it not been for the fact that my children were flying in from Los Angeles and Minneapolis, I would have been there with Connie, George, and Bobby. I would have told you of the countless times I would walk in my house and find Petie in bed with my mother watching TV. How she adored him! I would have told you that he was the first one to jump into my pool before it was even finished. I would have told you how I stood up to thugs to get back Petie's suits that were stolen from my unlocked car. (I got them back for $25.00) I would have told you of the times we spent at your home, and how your family became mine as well. I have tried to call you Karen, but no answer. It was a phone number given to me by Petie a few years back. I will try again. My love to you all and my deepest condolences. I, too, am grieving. Sherry

Karen,I am blessed to have shared my classroom, students and two years of my teaching career with Mr. Yevak as an AVID Tutor at Menchville High School. I will always appreciate his willingness to do what was needed to make our students successful. Always smiling, pleasant and eager to add his insight when we discussed current events. I will never forget him sitting and watching the students play board games, even participating in Taboo. Hilarious! On behalf of Mrs. Sharon Moore and the AVID Classes of Menchville High School 2010-2012, Thank you Mr. Yevak, You Made A Difference. Family, I will pray for The Holy Spirit's comfort.

Karen and Family, I got to know Petie through the AVID Program while I was teaching at Washington Middle School. He was a great tutor and really enjoyed working with the sixth graders. We used to talk about our families and the old days at NNHS. He was a kind man. I am praying for your family during this time.

What a sad day to see Petie leave us. He was such a dear friend and neighbor as we were growing up in that fun neighborhood and all those great years at NNHS. We had been in touch a bit since the 2007 Reunion and it was fun catching up. But now he is free from pain and enjoying the sweet presence of the Lord. Praying for his family.

Paw Paw Pete as we called him on Lombardy Ave was a free spirit and a open minded friend for me and friends and co-workers. He always took the time to chill and hang out with anybody. He would listen to whatever was on your mind. I loved my time jamming with him on guitar. His playing with my father, Pat Power) was my introduction to playing music. In all my talks with him I knew he deeply loved his family and especially his children and grandchildren. I'm sad that I didn't get to see him since I moved back to Hampton. I will look forward to rocking out with him in heaven.

Much Love & Prayers to those he leaves behind.

Stephanie and Pete's family, I am so sorry for your loss. I met Pete several years ago. He was such a kind person. He knew I was going through a rough time and would check up on me to make sure I was ok. He even surpised me one time by bringing a birthday card to me at my work. I would see him in the summer at GrandView with Stephanie's son. Not many people make such an impression as he did. The world needs more people like him. I will never forget him. I feel fortunate that I was able to have known him even if it was a brief moment in my life. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Though not the biggest Typhoon, Petie had as much punch per pound as any we knew or played with. We saw him only infrequently in the last 40+ years, but on each occasion, it was a pleasure. It appears he packed a great deal into a life we wish were not as short. We will remember him fondly. With our condolences,

Dear Karen, Shannon and Tommy,
I want to share my love of your family on the loss of your brothers, Bobby and Petie.
Your mother and father were dear friends of mine. As you know, your dad & I coached football together for many years & I loved cooking for your mom. I will always remember Petie and Bobby playing ball for me. They were wonderful to coach
and I loved them dearly. The Yevaks are special people. They were in the family of Harrison Phoebus, who the town of Phoebus was named for. To all of you, with all my love at this time. We know both boys are in Heaven with your parents. God bless you and we love you dearly. Mickey and Carol Marcella

Megan, Brianna and the entire Yevak family, I would like to extend my condolences to you. I enjoyed the times I had with Pete just sitting around while he strummed the guitar, joking, laughing, and playing games. This is how I will remember him as this was the only way I ever saw him.

I love my daddy so much. He was always there for me for anything. My dad loved life and everything in it. His heart was bigger than the sun. I will miss my dad's songs like the desert misses the rain. He doesn't want us to be sad. He wants us to be joyful and tell jokes. I love you Daddy.

I am at such a loss for words for my friend Petie. He has been such a good friend ever since I openned my first guitar store back in the 1970's. He had such a passion for life, his friends and family. His witt and laughter were second to none and I will miss that. Once in my early years in the music business, Petie came by our store, and it was a kinda stressful day. He looked around the shop and headed for the door, he turned around and sez: "You're losing your fun factor". I never forgot that and I'm glad I was able to remind him of this the last time he came by the store. May God bless you my friend. I'll never forget you and I will keep your friends and family in my prayers.
