Just learned of Dr. Barnes passing today when I had my six month dental appointment. Both of us had a strong interest in Civil War history and we always found the time to discuss something we had an interest about. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Kathy,
We are so sorry to hear of Richard's passing. He is such a thoughtful, caring, kind man - he was a wonderful and supportive mentor for Mike and me when we were students at MCV and as we became involved in the VDA. He had such a great way of seeing the best in everyone! We always enjoyed seeing you two at meetings. Dear Kathy,
Barbara and I have been out of town and just heard of Richard's passing, and were absolutely stunned.
Richard was much more than a client to me and Virginia Labs; he was a friend, confidant, and a mentor to me on all things dental.
He will be greatly missed by me as well as his many patients.

Dr. Barnes was my family's dentist from the time he came to Hampton until his last retirement in Newport News. He was always a kind, wonderful person who took great care of his patients, and he will be missed. My sincere sympathy to Kathy and the rest of the family. May he Rest in Peace.

Dr. Barnes was my dentist since 1980. He has served my mom and daughter, too. As so many have stated previously, Dr. Barnes was very professional and yet compassionate. I, too, looked forward to my office visits and his humor. If he wasn't treating you directly, he'd always pop in to greet, and ask, how've you been.

My heart goes out to Kathy and Richard's family. What a special man he was. I was always amazed at the fact that he commuted to Richmond from Newport News every day for four years of dental school. Few dentists love their profession as much as Richard. He was one of a kind and will be missed by his patients, staff, and colleagues alike.

To Kathy & the rest of the family I am saddened to hear of Dr. Barnes's passing. My mom became a patient of Dr. Barnes while she was pregnant with me & he was the only dentist I saw until his retirement. My mom always said he had a great "bedside" manner, which is probably why I never hated going to the dentist. He always told me that my teeth looked "Damn Good" after several years of braces. And during my appointments we would both talk about good times we had a Virginia Tech. He will be greatly missed.

Dr.Barnes was my dentist for almost 30 years and loved going to the the movies as well. We always had a movie story to talk about when I would come for a cleaning (or sometimes more, he pulled as few teeth of mine as well). He will be missed!

We were very sad to read of Richard' passing. He was a teacher,mentor,colleague and longtime friend. He was a wonderful role model of how to live life. He will be sorely missed. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with Kathy and the entire family.
