William Warrick Obituary

William "Bill" Burford Warrick, 67, of Williamsburg, VA, passed away at home on June 6, 2020 from complications of colon cancer. He is survived by his wife, Mary "Lindy" McGill Warrick; his children, Laura Warrick Piwetz (Robert Keith Piwetz) of Fort Worth, TX, Mary "Molly" Warrick McFarland (Matthew Robert McFarland) of Charlottesville, VA, Katherine "Kate" McGill Warrick of Houston, TX; his brother, George Alto Warrick III (Mary Jane Warrick) of Blakely, GA; his five grandchildren, William Moses McFarland, Daley Elizabeth McFarland, John Warrick McFarland, Charlotte Page Piwetz and Jack Preston Piwetz. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Alto Warrick II and Rowena Burford Warrick of Blakely, GA.

Bill attended Early County High School in Blakely, GA. He was known for his kindness, smarts, compassion and sense of fun. He graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1970 and went on to attend Auburn University. While at Auburn, he came to faith through the ministry Campus Crusade for Christ. He was a member of the fraternity Beta Theta Pi. He changed his major from pre-med to French when he decided to pursue seminary. His semester abroad in Clermont Ferrand, France made him into a francophile for life.

Bill graduated from Auburn in 1974, and he went on to pursue a Master of Divinity from Trinity Theological Seminary in Chicago. His passion for the Bible, teaching, and evangelism grew during his time and training there. He decided to pursue a career with Campus Crusade for Christ upon graduating and went to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. At a ministry-sponsored ski trip, he met another staff member, Lindy, who was to become the love of his life. They served together at Texas Tech for a year before being asked to start a Campus Crusade chapter at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. They fell in love with the town of Williamsburg and the College. Bill found his mentor, Dick Woodward, at Williamsburg Community Chapel.

Bill served faithfully at the Chapel for over 30 years, primarily in the role of senior pastor. Bill met people where they were on their spiritual journeys and was known for his teaching and charisma. He valued hospitality and was known for opening his doors at all hours of the day for anyone who needed somewhere to go. He particularly invested in mentoring relationships. He always had a Friday afternoon Bible study for William & Mary students and was given the 6th man award from the William & Mary basketball team in recognition of his mentorship. His gift for music touched many people and was a great source of comfort to his family. For the past 7 years, he has been the head of Williamsburg Fellowship and his faithfulness has been evident to all.

Through the course of his long fight with cancer, he refused to be slowed down. Whether preaching on a Sunday evening, meeting people during the week to talk about their lives, celebrating a holiday with his family and friends and playing with his grandchildren, he was a man who truly lived life to the fullest. His proudest accomplishment was his three daughters. He valued them above all else and they were so well loved by him. He was the biggest advocate and cheerleader for his girls.

A family graveside service will be held in Blakely, GA on July 3. Due to the current pandemic, a celebration of life service is being planned for September 11th at the Williamsburg Community Chapel; details will follow. In lieu of flowers, it was Bill's request that gifts may be made to Walsingham Academy or to the Marble Retreat. Bill's request to support Walsingham reflects his great appreciation for Sister Mary Jeanne's kindness and support through the years, particularly for offering a first home to the Chapel many years ago, and more recently to his Williamsburg Fellowship meetings. Gifts may be sent to: Walsingham Academy, P.O. Box 8702, Williamsburg, VA 23187 (attention: Walsingham Academy: Tuition Assistance). Marble Retreat is a ministry of healing, hope and restoration serving pastors and those in Christian ministry. Gifts may be sent to Marble Retreat, PO Box 176, Carbondale, CO 81623 or made online at www.marbleretreat.org.

Bill was my mentor at William & Mary. He used to host Bible study sessions for our basketball team at his house, and those sessions are some of my fondest memories. His wisdom truly helped shape who I am today. Now, every time I open my Bible in the morning, I think of him.

Hard to believe it has been a full year since Bill went on ahead of us, on HOME to his great reward. His legacy lives on here -- the fruit of his labors, his service, his ministry, his life. His influence will not diminish and will always be treasured by so many men and women, boys and girls, who were blessed to know Bill, who love him still. And love and hugs to Lindy and the girls, all his family, who are carrying on with grace and faith....until that glad day of reunion.

Dearest Bill. That is how I think of him. He was one of the funniest people I have ever known, an amazing raconteur. When I think of him, I miss his quick wit and his Godly advice. I will always be grateful to the Lord to have Bill in our lives. I also treasure Lindy’s friendship.

Bill also had a powerful ministry to men on Thursday mornings at the Plaza Hotel and later the Hellenic Center. Bill faithfully continued Dick Woodward’s Thursday ministry where for decades men of all walks of life were led to the Lord and discipled.

I will always remember Bill Warrick as a warm, hospitable man. I first met Bill around the time of his daughter Molly's marriage to my nephew, Matt. He was so gracious and a very personable, easy to talk to person. It was clear that he dearly loved his wife and had a special, endearing relationship with his daughters. His life testimony which started with Campus Crusade in college is such an inspiration and a testament to the importance of campus ministry to college students. We are grateful for Bill's life and service to the Lord.

As new believers, Bill and I studied the Word and knelt around Cru staff member Steve King's coffee table to pray with 8 other men while at Auburn. We were transformed by the Gospel and that community of faith. I'm so thankful for our shared history. Lindy, your faithfulness and Bill's over a lifetime have encouraged us, inspired us, and shown us God's great care to hold on to us - and to carry us just as a Father carries his son in all the way we walk through this life. (Dt. 1:30-31) We're praying for you and your girls.

Bill was an incredible mentor to our son. God set Bill down, in the right place and at the right time. Im still weeping but I know he sits with his Lord. Bill and Lindy are good and faithful servant.s. Thank you God for sharing Bill with us on earth. Love, Emily and Hawley Smith, Jr.

Bill and his teachings changed my life as he directed me to knowing Jesus personally and relationally. I spent my entire childhood in church not knowing what Bill so eloquently and passionately revealed by teaching from the Word and his heart. He was there during a time of great loss and celebration of renewal. He will be remembered for his gifts and how they intersected with my life.

I met Bill Warrick in the 90s when he called me asking me to play the piano for the new 8:00 am Sunday services the Chapel was starting. From the first time I heard him preach, I knew he was a man of God. I brought my young teenage son to the Chapel. He and Bill both had a common appreciation for C. S. Lewis. God used Bill in our lives to help us grow spiritually. Bill came to my sons Eagle Scout ceremony, taking time out of his busy schedule. He cared about people. I lost my dad recently and Bill in his weak state called to express his condolences. I have learned so much from Bills teaching, more than from any pastor in my life. I rejoice that he is with His Savior. He will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I first met Bill in seminary in Chicago and we bonded as two southern souls totally out of our element. Bill was a truth teller and never held back. You trusted his counsel because he was so grounded in the Word of God and so clearly loved the Lord. He loved to have fun and laugh almost more than any person I have ever known. One of his favorite places to go was a little tavern where they played Chicago jazz. His love for all kinds of music was evident. Bill was also fearless. He greatly admired a very busy minister in a large downtown Chicago church. That did not stop him from contacting Warren Wiersby who ended up mentoring Bill during his whole time in seminary. His interest in people and their individual stories never waned. On our last visit with he and Lindy his illness did not stop him from fixing us a beautiful meal, of course with a French flair. Bill, you loved us well and know that you will be one of the first ones to welcome us to our heavenly home. We love you.

In Bills own words, God heals all, some here, some in his Kingdom. Those were powerful words when my father passed and are soothing words for me today. I am so blessed to have learned from Bill for 22 years at the Mens Bible Breakfasts in NN and and the Chapel. It is with deepest sincerity that I hope he knows the impact he had on me and my relationship with Christ. While I always had a great relationship with my Dad, going to the breakfast with him the last 7-8 years of his life are times I will never forget. Bill was a huge part of that! He will be deeply missed, yet joyful that he is with Jesus. I love you and miss you Bill, but will see you again. My best to Lindy and the girls.
All my love and support,
Stephen

Two years ago, we joined the Bill and Lindy on a trip to Israel. Bill kept reminding over and over to not forget the hand of God while we were looking at the land of God. It changed our whole perspective. When I heard that Bill had been called home, I immediately thought of him reminding us to look for the Hand of God in what we saw. That morning I pictured the hands of our Savior open wide to receive Bill into Heaven. That day, Bill didnt have to look for the hand of God because now he is actually held by those hands for eternity.

I met Bill as a classmate at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (1976). Four of us shared an apartment and I still remember our living room filled with seminary students' books and desks. I apologize for when it was my night to cook - but Bill, Jeff and Pete were gracious. Bill's infectious laugh and joyful personality still are etched in my memory. So proud of the faithful life he lived for our Savior, the Lord Jesus. We feel the sting of death, but know that Bill does not! Our prayers and deep sympathies to Bill's family.

He signed his name, along with 10 other men In our group, to spend the rest of his life fulfilling the great commission. I had the joy if reconnecting with him 7 plus years ago and love him dearly. Each time we connected we rejoiced and rehearsed stories from our days at Auburn and new challenges and adventures we were facing. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 KJV

What an example for all of us who have called Bill a friend and mentor for the last 30 years. I will always cherish watching him these last few months continue to share the Word of God with us. 47 years ago I started the Thursday Bible Study with Dick Woodward and then watched Bill assume the mantel when Dick graduated to heaven. I have many of Bills CDs and I listen to them often as I travel. What a reunion they must be having in heaven. Thank you Lindy and his girls for sharing Bill with the world. You are in my prayers.
