Conner Farrish "C.F." Yates Jr. September 21, 1926 - April 29, 2014 Conner Farrish "C.F." Yates Jr. was born on September 21, 1926, and died peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at home in Culpeper. The elder child of the late Conner and Elsie Yates was born in Griffinsburg in Culpeper County. His beloved wife of 35 years and his children's mother, Frankie B. Yates, preceded him in death. He also lost his only sibling, Josephine, and a cherished grandson, Conner Yates. His loving companion of 21 years, Russell Lane also preceded him. Later in life he married Gertrude Hudson who was a devoted wife and also preceded him in death. C.F. graduate from Culpeper County High School in 1943 where he was the school SCA president, 4-H president, and captain of the baseball team. C.F. won a full scholarship to the University of Richmond for a national speech contest. At the University of Richmond, he was President of the debate club, and Signa Alpha Epsilon, on the baseball team, boxed, and was the first non-ministerial student elected to the Religious Council. C.F. was the last living member of the original Culpeper Regional Hospital Board, Staff Sergeant serving in the United States Army infantry in the Philippines and later in Korea. He was a member of the Culpeper County Electoral Board for 10 years, Deacon and Sunday school teacher at New Salem Church, Sports Director of WCVA Radio Station, Zone Governor of the Rappahannock District Ruritans. He served as President of the Culpeper Library Board, President of the Md./Va Milk Producers Association, and President of the 5 County Rural Mail Carriers, President of the Salem, Grymes, and Culpeper Parent Teacher Associations, and was a Recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award. C.F. was also the moderator of the Shiloh Baptist Association for 3 years. The association included 40 churches in 5 counties. He served as Chairman of the Cancer Crusade, and the Heart Fund for Culpeper County. C.F. was very sports mined, playing baseball until he was 40 years of age, tennis until he was 70, and bowling until he was 85. His occupations were dairy farmer and merchant for 25 years, rural mail carrier for 24 years, and DJ at WCVA for 7 years. C.F. enjoyed traveling and toured 22 foreign countries and all 50 states. At home, he was a faithful friend and always enjoyed visiting his neighbors at their residences. He is survived by his beloved children: son, Greg Yates and his wife, Liz; daughters, Jo Gale Lane and her husband, Steve, Wendy Sanders, Raven Yates and her husband, David Harris; his cherished grandchildren, Jenny Linfoot and her husband, Scott, Cameron Yates, Ryan Lane and his wife, Beth; one step-grandchild, Jessica Kerns; and one great grandchild, Maddox Lane. The family held a memorial service at the State Theatre 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, followed by a gathering in the Fellowship Hall at New Salem Baptist Church in Griffinsburg. A private family interment will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, C.F. requested that donations be made to either, New Salem Baptist Church, 8233 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA 22701 or Salem Fire and Rescue Department, 14328 Scotts Mill Rd, Culpeper, VA 22701.
