Doris Marsh Obituary

Doris Lucille Marsh, age 80, passed away unexpectedly on July 8, 2023. She is survived by three children, daughters Sara Marsh Tueting, Katherine Marsh Package, and Thomas Franklin Marsh and their respective spouses; Mark R. Tueting, Michael A. Package, and Tara L. Harrison; and nine grandchildren, Emilie, Jack, Ben, and Zachary Tueting; Sara, Thomas, and Emma Package; and John F. and Samantha Marsh. She also is survived by her sister, Frances Adele Aiton of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Doris was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 17, 1942, to Dorothy S. Anthon and Francis J. Anthon. She attended primary school in Valley Stream, New York and graduated high school from Valley Stream Central High School, where she was a National Merit Scholar and member of the National Honor Society. Doris graduated Northwestern University with a major in business and was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She was a strong supporter in her sorority after graduation and edited its alumni newsletter for many years.

After graduating from college, she moved to New York City and worked for Merrill Lynch before relocating to Washington, D.C., to work for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). There she met and married her husband, John William Marsh of Decatur, Illinois, in 1968. Following the birth of her children, Doris took a role at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, D.C., as a senior bank examiner and accounting policy expert. She earned both her Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designations.

Doris was an active, passionate supporter of women's rights and human rights charities, including the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Habitat for Humanity, and served as Treasurer for the Women in Housing and Finance association of Washington, D.C. She also actively supported numerous female and Democratic political candidates. Doris challenged the glass ceiling throughout her career, including a successful lawsuit against the FDIC for failing to promote her over her male colleagues.

Doris and John lived in Vienna, Virginia, until 2003, then following their retirements, resided in Wintergreen, Virginia, and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, until 2018 when they relocated to the Charlottesville, Virginia area.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation in her name to the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority (https://www.alphaxidelta.org/online-giving-form) or to the Women in Housing & Finance Foundation (https://whfdc.org/donations/). A memorial service is planned for 11 A.M. Sat., Aug. 5th at Holy Cross Church in Batesville, Virginia.

I am so sad to hear this news. I was her Alpha Xi Delta sister at Northwestern. I have very much appreciated her keeping all the Alpha Thetas of a certain era together via the semi annual newsletters she literally dragged out of us. I will definitely miss her, and remember her fondly. TFJ

Doris was a good friend to me. We not only worked together at the FDIC but also carpooled for many years. This time together allowed us to share the joys and struggles of our respective family lives. After retirement, we stayed in touch, and her intellect allowed the conversation to go to many places. Our last conversation was diverted to the Franco-Prussian War when I asked what drove her grandfather to immigrate to America. I will miss those discussions and the wisdom Doris always brought in dealing with life's issues.

Doris was a wonderful friend and co worker. My sympathy goes out to her family. Our friendship goes back to mid 60s when Doris moved to VA and joined the SEC staff. We became fast friends and at one time shared an office. During that time she married John Marsh. We attended the wedding which was a grand and happy day for
Doris and John. Later in the early 80s I enticed Doris to move to the FDIC and Join my Section. she was an outstanding employee. Our friendship continued and I have many memories of good times with her and she quickly gained the respect of her fellow workers. Her talents were widely recognized and after 15 years she moved on to a more responsible position. Our friendship was not lost by the move and continued to her retirement and beyond. Doris was a remarkable
person. Too many good times to recall here, but I will cherish our times together and hold fast to her memory in the days ahead.
