Eugene Pollock Obituary

Eugene "Gene" "Dean" Perry Pollock (1929-2023) died peacefully in Charlottesville, Va., with wife Mary W. Pollock by his side. In addition to Mary, Dean is survived by his two sons, Eugene E. and William, and four grandchildren: Racquel, Maximilian, Tony and Cameron Pollock.

Dean was born in a small Idaho town to Mormon parents, Viva and Rex Pollock, the middle child between siblings Jaqueline "Jackie" and Duane Pollock.

After a stint living in San Francisco, Dean trained at Fort Bragg before being sent overseas to Japan, where he was stationed in Tokyo and Yokohama.

Following military service Dean settled in New York City, where he started work at American Express on Wall Street. Later he was hired at Edward E. Finch & Co., a television-merchandising company. He became chief copywriter, responsible for product placement on such shows as Let's Make a Deal, The Gong Show, Family Feud and others. Dean worked directly with many familiar names, like Bill Cullen, Jane Mansfield, Monte Hall, and others.

Following E.E. Finch Dean was tapped to become President, and later Chairman, of Sprigg Lane Corp., a family holding company. He served in this position until retiring in 2009.

In 1966 Dean married Mary Covington Weedon, and they lived happily in their West Side brownstone for more than 20 years, raising two sons, William and Luke, before moving to Charlottesville, Virginia in order to assist in caring for his elderly mother in law, Elizabeth Bayard Weedon, widow of University of Virginia Professor William Stone Weedon.

Dean died in the arms of his loving wife after 57 years of marriage on October 12 at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge at age 93.

To Mary, Luke and Will, I'm sorry for your loss. I did not know Dean well, but I recall having a nice conversation with him during his birthday party at NLRG years ago. He had an impressive career. My wife's parents enjoyed knowing him at Westminster Canterbury. I wish you the best in your time of sorrow.

To Mary, Will and Luke, I was sad to see this news. I remember many happy days in your brownstone and visiting you in Charlottesville so many years ago. Dean was always welcoming and warm. May your memories sustain you in this difficult period and in the future. Sending love.

Gene will be forever remembered for living in Northern Idaho, bring a "miners son," and all of his cousins and family. I only visited Mary and Gene once in NYC and was treated as though we were royalty. If anything Gene provided a path for me out of the mines, seeing his successes gave me hope to attend college and plans for a higher lifestyle. Another thing I admired about him was he never forgot his roots nor his family. He would often attend reunions and gatherings in Idaho or Utah . Aunt Ruth was a favorite and got a visit if he was nearby. A kind, gentle spirit that the world is a little bit diminished by his leaving, I miss him. Kent
