James Dulaney Obituary

James Fillmore "Phil" Dulaney, Jr., 72, husband of Sandi (Burns) Dulaney, of Staunton, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, in The Retreat at Fishersville from complications from diabetes and heart disease.

Phil was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on December 12, 1950, son of the late James Fillmore Dulaney, Sr., who was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, and Elizabeth (Weston) Dulaney.

Phil attended Saint James School in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he played varsity football in his first year and later became captain of the varsity football and basketball teams. A recipient of the Saint James "Gentleman and Scholar" award, Phil served for many years on the Saint James Board of Trustees. He was a proud graduate of the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, where he played college football.

He was the third generation Owner / President of Charlottesville Oil, Inc.; he was the Owner / President of Charlottesville Realty Corporation; and he operated Skyline Swannanoa, Inc. in Afton. While running these companies, he received his MBA from the University of Richmond.

Phil enjoyed watching college football and UVA basketball with his wife, and he closely followed college sports rankings. He was a history buff and proud Republican.

Surviving in addition to his wife of forty-five years are a son, William Jeffrey Bennett and wife, Jessica; a granddaughter, Emily; two sisters, Reta (Dulaney) Hurd and Alice Dulaney; two brothers-in-law, William Henry Hurd, and Jerry Burns and wife, Eileen; as well as loving nieces and nephews, and Phil's beloved pets, his dog "Lady" whom he called "Ruff Ruff" and his cat "Tiger" whom he called "Hold that Tiger".

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2023, in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Todd Latham. A reception will follow at a location to be announced.

Instead of flowers, it is suggested to those who desire, please make a memorial contribution to the Shenandoah Valley Animal Services, 1001 Mt. Torrey Road, Lyndhurst, VA 22952.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
