J.O. "Orvin" Shiflett, 96, of Earlysville, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2017. Born on December 2, 1920, in Greene County, he was a son of the late Elijah and Christine Marshall Shiflett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Neva Snow Shiflett; and his sister, Hazel Herring. J.O. is survived by his son, J.E. "Jimmy" Shifflett and his wife, Betty; two daughters, Jo Ann Anderson and Cindy Kent and her husband, Wes; eight grandchildren, Jeffery Anderson and his wife, Claire, Marty Shifflett and his wife, Laura, Justin Kent and his wife, Jamie, Catherine Ignudo and her husband, Angelo, Suzy Ornee and her husband, Chris, Stacey Schellhammer and her husband, Chris, Ashley Wallace, and Emily Dickerson and her husband, Ryan; and 13 great-grandchildren. He will also be sorely missed by his sister, Doris Richards; and a host of family and friends. J.O. served in the U.S. Army during World War II having served the European Campaign and awarded the Purple Heart. He was a retired painting contractor. J.O. was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. He was a charter member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church; his greatest love however, was his children and family. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at Cherry Avenue Christian Church. A reception will immediately follow at the church. Graveside services will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens where J.O. will be reunited and laid to rest next to his wife, Neva. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at Teague Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial contributions in J.O.'s memory be made to Cherry Avenue Christian Church, 1720 Cherry Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
