I never met David, but I served with his son, David Ives Mixter, in the US Army Special Forces. David was a great guy and soldier and it sounds like his dad was also.

Mr. and Mrs. Mixter were my champions, ever since I was a little boy, and Stephen was my best friend. I remember wonderful times at Hanson Rd., Indian Spring Trail, and at Greenleaf, the road on which my family lived. Whenever I visited Darien, I was asked (commanded!) to stop by for tea to catch up. I can't count how many wonderful visits we had in their sitting room. They wanted to hear EVERYthing that was happening in my life. They always told me that I could do it, whatever it was; that I would find a way to make everything be right. They supported me through so many challenges -- and, were very enthusiastic cheerleaders celebrating my happiness and successes. They encouraged me, and taught me to actually see and appreciate my gifts and talents. They were so kind and always "in my corner". Mr. and Mrs. Mixter were my rocks, my guides and the people I knew loved me, for me, always. Besides my parents, they were the most important and beloved grownups in my life, all of my life. I am so truly thankful for them and that they will always be with me.

David Mixter is vividly etched in my memory. He engaged with authentic concern with everyone in his extended family, and the warmth of his expansive soul, his eloquence, and his presence was always affirming and validating. While he is no longer with us, all of those whom he has touched will no doubt remember him as a truly remarkable man
