Michael A Schlanger
June 22, 2021
For the months of June and July 1969, Michael was my sibling summer associate and office mate at Paul Weiss. There were 22 of us that Summer, including many of the smartest, most interesting, most accomplished people I ever have known, then or thereafter, to the present day. We were a true band of brothers and sisters, and drew energy, enthusiasm and delight from each other's professional and personal company. Michael was my closest friend that Summer, a constant source of wisdom, insight, warmth and fun. He was naturally funny, exuberant, caring and compassionate, imbued with a sense of justice, and a clear vision of how to make a life's work of making the world a better place through law.
As the center on the undefeated Princeton football team, Michael had the inner serenity of a person who had achieved great success in competitive sports at the highest level, and had nothing to prove to anyone, including himself. He enjoyed the anonymity of being overshadowed by his Princeton and Oxford roommate, Bill Bradley. ("Just another Rhodes Scholar nobody ever heard of," he said of himself.) As years passed, I lost touch with Michael, but thought often of him. Of Muhammad Ali, Robert Lipsyte wrote, "In his presence, people smiled, as though warmed by a Sun." That is the way Michael was, and it was heartwarming to see that the New York Times so well captured the essence of this wonderful man. Michael A. Schlanger
