Gilbert BYERMAN Obituary

BYERMAN, Gilbert D. "Gil" 81, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2017. He was born on January 17, 1936 to Charlie and Helen (Boltz) Byerman in Springfield, Ohio. He was a graduate of Springfield High School class of 1953; received a B.S. in Education degree from Wittenberg University and a Master's Degree in Flute Performance from the University of Cincinnati. Gil began his career as a music educator at South Elementary School in Fairbom, Ohio, taught for many years at Shawnee High School and at Reid and Rockway Middle Schools. He was a born teacher as he loved working with the students. With much diligent practicing and hard work he became adept as a professional flutist, clarinetist and saxophone player. He was a student of Robert Cavalli who was the first flutist with the Cincinnati Symphony, and Gil was blessed to serve as first flutist with the Springfield Symphony for many years. He was a member of many dance bands in the area, played Kenley shows, Suttmiller shows, Ice Shows in Dayton; and he played for entertainers such as Red Skelton, Liberace, Sammy Davis, Jr. and many others. In 1957 he met and fell in love with Ann Trimble whom he married in 1958 and enjoyed this companionship for 59 years. In addition to his wife Ann he leaves to cherish his memory one son, John Byerman, New Carlisle; a sister Janet Wheaton, Springfield, Ohio; brothers-in-law John (Maudie) Trimble, Enon, Ohio; Steve Trimble, Katy, Texas; and a sister-in-law Mary Lou (Ron) Adkisson, Jacksboro, Tennessee; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Richard Byerman, sister-in-law Pat Byerman, and brother-in-law Carroll Wheaton. Gil was blessed by many close friendships that he cherished dearly. In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the American Parkinson's Disease Assn, Dayton Hospice or Enon Methodist Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 PM in Trostel, Chapman, Dunbar & Fraley Funeral Home, with the funeral service beginning at 7:00 PM. Mr. Byerman was my childhood hero. He helped me to become a very decent musician. He was the only thing that I enjoyed out of high school. I wasn´t a very good student at the time, but I excelled in my music classes, and was always first chair in everything. I am watching the movie whiplash, and I was thinking about him. I have always loved you And have missed you for most of my life. If anyone wants to talk about this lovely man, you can call me or text me at 937-3 60-3710. I love you, Mr. Byerman forever.

Mr. Byerman was truly one of the best teachers I ever had. He is one of the main reasons I became a teacher myself. When I look back on my teen years, I have to thank Mr. Byerman for his calm leadership and gentle way. His memory and life lessons will live in my heart forever.

Gil was a best friend and great neighbor for so many years. He was one of the nicest people I have ever known. We had great times together and I will miss him greatly but I will never forget him.

Probably one of the greatest influences in my life. He taught me so much about music and was easily the best teacher I had at Shawnee. As the new kid in school he welcomed me into the marching band and it began a great moment in my life. I started school that fall with new friends and a wonderful mentor. I'm so sad to hear of his passing, but he was loved and appreciated by so many. Rest In Peace Mr. B.

I have great memories of Mr. Byerman through my years of band and marching band at Shawnee High School. He was a great instructor and positively touched many lives throughout the years. Just know that he lives on in the students' memories. I am lucky to have been taught by him.

The world is a better place because he was.... I was and continue to be a better person for all he taught me, both in and out of the band room. Thank you for your gifts and thank you, Gil's family, for sharing your husband and father with us. Know that his spirit lives on in so many.

Ann and John, I am so sorry to hear of my friend, teacher, and fellow flutist passing! Am sure with his new body, he will again be able to play the music he so loved! Each time when I get to Ohio, I had planned to find where you lived and visit. Now it will have to wait! I continue to carry the love he shared in music! Sending love and prayers of comfort! He was an excellent teacher and encouraged me to continue.

Gil was a kind and gracious man. He was a wonderful and most competent musician. He suffered far too long with that dread disease known as Parkinson's. He is now free from that and more alive and pain free than ever before as he celebrates now in heaven with his Savior the Lord Jesus. I am glad I knew him and he will be missed. God bless the family! Mr. Byerman was always the professional musician. He marched along side his marching band for years. What memories I have of his wonderful instruction. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with so many. Rest in Peace.
